Wow...We visited Poppies while on our honeymoon. The food was excellent and the wine...amazing. Poppy herself has a great story to tell which added another dimension to our lunch. Strongly recommend.
A great place for lunch and wine tasting in Martinborough. Platters are the go and they are excellent. Loved the Pinot and the Rose. The on top of that the service was amazing.
Poppies has great wines which the owner will happily pour for you. The wine is only available at the vineyard so it is not to be missed. Her husband is the chef and the platter we shared for lunch was outstanding.
We came here in January for lunch and a wine tasting and were immediately impressed with the service and happy staff members who were more than helpful. We were asked if we would like a tasting with Poppy and of course we said yes! The wines were all delicious it was hard making a decision but we went with the rose and the pinot gris which were both amazing and complimented the tasting platter very well! They only serve platters but they do it very well, each item on the platter was great, especially the pork belly, and the desserts were so good we had to order another portion (thinking that 3 would be enough to share between 6 but they were too good we needed more!) we got the chocolate and chilli cake and the lemon and coconut cake, make sure you don't leave without trying these! Poppy was absolutely lovely and her husband came out to have a chat and make sure everything was going ok, they make a great team and ensure that everybody is happy which was a nice change from some of the other vineyards we had visited that week! I will definitely be back next year and couldn't recommend Poppies more! Make sure you book in advance so you don't miss out!
I'm not even sure I want to write this review in case the world finds out about Poppies pinot gris and there is no longer enough to go around!Simply put, all of Poppies wines are extremely delicious. My husband and I stumbled across the vineyard the week before our wedding in search of wines to serve at our reception, we walked away with the pinot gris and rose and had rave reviews from our guests. Every time we return to Wellington, we make a point to visit the vineyard, or have friends pick us up a bottle. I haven't had the pleasure of dining in, but can't wait to sit in for a platter and a vino next time we are in town.
We didn't have a reservation so just did the wine tasting and booked a table for the following day! You need to book ahead! The wine tasting was really good, the personalities and friendly staff make the wine taste even better. We bought a bottle and have since drank it, it was great! When we did eat there the following day, the platter was delicious!
Visited with friends-as the designated driver I wasn't able to taste wines, but the platters we shared were outstanding. The passion of the staff for what they do was very evident, and would recommend as part of any Martinborough adventure
We were staying in Martinborough for my birthday and we'd heard that Poppies did amazing platters. They certainly exceeded out exceptions; so yummy we could have eaten one each.On the platter you get 16 different things, including cheese, hummus, olives, salmon, pork belly and more. Also a good load of bread. It was absolutely beautiful sitting out in the sun eating the platter with a lovely 2014 Gewürztraminer; also, the yummiest, sweetest Gewürztraminer I have tried to date.We also had some wine tasting which they didn't charge us for because we decided to eat there. The platter came out reasonably quick; probably with 20 minutes. Lovely service; they even asked us if we wanted more bread. We didn't need anymore as we were full. We jumped on our bikes we hired and cycled back to Martinborough Square. You should definitely go there as you wont be disappointed.
After reading the reviews on tripadvisor we had high expectations and they were certainly met! The only negatives were we didn't book for lunch and it was a cool, overcast day and had to sit outside but they thoughtfully provided wraps for us if needed. The wines are superb and we purchased a selection. We also enjoyed one of their famous platters. We were enjoying the food and wine so much we forgot it was cold outside. The service was excellent with Poppy making us feel as though we were guests in their home sharing her wines and her passion for what she does. It's also obvious a lot of thought has gone into their premises, even the ladies seemed luxurious. Would totally recommend a visit!
We stayed at a beautiful B&B (Old Manse) in Martinborough and did a walk of the wineries. we arrived at Poppies hoping to get lunch, they were just about to shut their kitchen as they had a wedding that evening however they said they would still serve us something and we left it to Poppy's husband - forgotten his name, and he came out with this beautiful platter, we had wine tasting with Poppy she is very passionate about their vineyard and a terrific host. We had a lovely bottle of wine with our platter and a very pleasant afternoon highly recommend, all staff were friendly and even thou they had a function to get ready for we were by no means 'hurried along'.if you are in Martinborough definitely visit.
Poppies cafe is part of Poppies winery, run and owned by Poppy (winemaker) and her husband, who is the viticulturist. They were both there on the Sunday that we visited, Poppy hosting the wine tastings, and her husband helping with serving the platters. One can taste the wine then sit at a table, or as we did sit in lovely old leather chairs by an open fire. We were then served a beautifully presented platter with a fresh baguette and a wide variety of foods such as thin slices of pork belly and beef fillet, smoked salmon, grilled zucchini, stuffed vine leaves, hummus tapenade, brie, roasted red peppers, marinated mushrooms and so on . It was all absolutely delicious and a great accompaniment to the wines. The ambiance is casual, friendly, but efficient. I imagine in the summer it would be just as pleasant sitting outside. If you are wanting to eat as we did, it might be a good idea to book first, especially around lunch time. It was very busy when we were there, and we can understand why !
My husband and I had a lovely visit to Poppies this afternoon. It had been recommended to me by a shop assistant in Greytown who is a Martinborough local. We were greeted on entry by Pip who was very friendly .She served us several wines to taste and seemed knowledgable and enthusiastic about the wines we tried. She, just as importantly had a way of making you feel at ease and welcome. After trying four or five wines we sat down to a beautiful platter for lunch. With sixteen different things to try, all freshly prepared on the premises, it was delicious and great value at $40 for two people. The platter is gluten free so if you want bread you can order it for an extra couple of dollars, which to me is a very good thing because so often when you order an antipasto platter, it comes bulked up with loads of bread and not much of anything else. This platter is great for both meat eaters and vegetarians( my husband eats meat but I don't) There was such a great variety on the platter that we were both very satisfied . Our waitress was lovely too.I would recommend this as a lovely place to spend a relaxing afternoon and we will definitely be going back in the summer when we can really make the most of the beautiful setting.
When in Martinborough you can't bypass this place. Not only are the grounds and wine amazing. It also serves up great food for something for substantial than the other wineries in town. The owner is lovely and friendly and was more than happy to participate in photo taking for us! Has an amazing function room - perfect for a wedding! Looking forward to going back.
Warm friendly welcome. Interesting wine tasting. Lovely summery al fresco lunch - light but gourmand. (Just look at the photo of the platters!) Exactly what we wanted. Great to see this new place is getting such good reviews - and is clearly getting a lot of custom - well deserved. We shall return! (BTW note that Trip Advisor has two listings for Poppies - both with rave reviews!!)
Absolutely no negatives at all. Shayne & Poppy are the most incredible hosts. Food & wine and setting is amazing.
