We spent an enjoyable hour in the shop browsing, chatting with staff and watching the video.Nice place, especially on a wet day
This is the second time I have done this tour and I loved it both times. The tour guides are so knowledgeable and they take you into buildings that you wouldn't walk into on your own, so that you can see art deco interiors.
Probably the best Art Deco weekend I've attended - everything ran smoothly, and the huge crowds were well managed. Only did a couple of paid events, but they were excellent - and all the free entertainment was superlative as usual. The Trust Shop is really coming into its own now - as someone with an interest in the period, I was very impressed with some of their merchandise - books, custom rugs, gift items etc. They have developed an excellent and varied line in products.
Knowledgeable guides who give you a good history of the town. I had no idea what I had been walking past all morning till my guide made me look up. The movie at the end is worthwhile and I enjoyed picking up a few things to take home at the shop.
On a recent cruise to New Zealand my wife and I visited Napier, New Zealand. Following a devastating earth quake in 1931 the town had to be rebuilt. They decided to use the Art Deco theme. You are taken back in time. The town is in pristine condition giving you the feeling of nostalgia from a time long gone. The feature is the wonderful building, the Criterion Hotel, showing wonderful leaded glass decoration. Another feature is the Sisters Houses, the only survivors of the earthquake and fire. You can get around by walking or bike. A great trip is provided by the Hawkes Bay Train with an in depth commentary that is both fascinating and informative. This excursion comes at a fee. Overall the experience at Napier should not be missed if you are in that area.
Recommend the walking tour, learn a lot about the history of the Art Deco architecture and people. The tour guide was knowledgable and competent in delivering the information. We liked the 5pm tour when the town is quieter.
So much of the Art Deco appearance of Napier has been from the impetus of the Art Deco trust, which continues to act as the focus of the movement. The walks which the volunteers provide are a mine of information, focussing on the tragedy of the earthquake and the subsequent rebuilding of the city, and the ongoing restoration of existing buildings. The shop supplies memorabilia, as well as items of clothing for the Art Deco week.
A fun walk around town with lots of interesting information. Too much cheaply made tacky imported "stuff" in shop. Very off putting but if you can bear to stay, the walk and movie are good and people lovely.
Art Deco week is of course the highlight of the year in the Napier calendar. Almost everyone in this town dresses up in Art Deco gear, the cars, the steam trains, steam tractors, musicians, children and more! You don't even bat an eye to see families dressed up to the nines in day clothes playing croquet in the Pania Park, or kids wearing suspenders and grubby clothes playing violins in the mall as they busk. One of the guided walking tours are brilliant - they are led by extremely enthusiastic art-deco-loving volunteers who know their stuff.
What a wonderful weekend. There were just so many things to see and do on Art Deco weekend. This was our second visit and we thought that it was just marvellous and so well organised. I could even download a copy of all the events onto my phone. Great
If like us you are short of time and want to know about Art Deco and Napier as fast as possible, then you can do no better than buy one of the guided walking tours. These are led by enthusiastic volunteers and you will learn about the earthquake and its devastation, the city rebuilding and the lovely art deco style chosen to symbolise modernity. You end up with a short video and a welcome cup of tea.
Napier is fill opf history. The best way to discover this is through a walking tour. Our guide Wyn was brilliant.
Good place to find out information about Art Deco tours. Staff very friendly and helpful. Good souvenir shopping
Excellent guide who gave a very informative commentary to the walk around the streets of Napier. I would recommend this walk to any visitor to Napier.
This tour of the Art Deco houses in Napier is well worth going on. The guide is well informed and enthusiastic. Be prepared for a ninety minute walking tour. The 5 pm one is probably the best as it is the most traffic free.
