We LOVED this little museum. It was packed to the gills with items of local and national interest and being fairly small, meant a quick visit actually enabled us to see everything. It's tempting not to read all the description and explanations in a museum but somehow this one invited me to do so and I came away with a better informed understanding of the area's history. The collection of Lindauer Maori portraits is a must see.
You would never guess the treasures that lie in wait inside the Whanganui Regional Museum. A gallery of Lindauers; Waka; Moa; and boney treats. The shop is fabulous too. Exquisite local art.
Thank you very much for taking the time to recommend us. It's always a pleasure to welcome guests from offshore. We're also very fond of the "House of Bones" exhibition - the old mansion setting is filled with humor that we enjoy very much as well. Thanks too for your donation, it's an important contribution that helps keep us free to everybody.
Thank you for your review and recommendation. It's always a buzz when people are enthused about the same things that we are, and great to be able to share it. Thanks for being an advocate and we look forward to welcoming you again.
Dear Anita,Thank you for bringing your guests here and for taking the time to review us. We're very proud of our Lindauer Gallery and see keeping admission free as an important contribution we can make. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Whanganui.
Dear Helen,Thanks for reviewing us, and for your comments. It's important to us to be able to share these stories, and always exciting when people connect with what we're doing.
Thanks for coming to visit us, and to take the time to write a review. We're very proud of our collection and hope, in time, to give it a bit more "breathing room". If you're down this way again, perhaps you'd like to sign up for a collection tour, where you can see some of our two back-of-house levels. It always surprises people how much there is to see.
The butterflies are still my favorites but there is lots of other fascinating things to look at in the Museum. There is the street to take you back in time, new exhibitions and the amazing waka. A good shop with a variety of local and interesting art. Always worth a visit.
Thank you for your kind words. We're so glad you took the time to enjoy the museum. It sounds like you had quite a long time with us! We hope to see you again soon.
Thank you very much for your kind words. Giving a warm welcome is very important to us, as is sharing the stories of our region.
If you're looking for detail of the life and times of the Maori, then look no further. This museum has an ENORMOUS room chock-full of their history. It's a lovely museum and is well worth a visit. I came away awe inspired...
A portion of the building was being quake proofed so there was not as much to see as normally would be.What was there was amazing - a specially large exhibition of artifacts from Africa sent shivers up the spine! A large hall of Maori history includes a very large waka (canoe). There are displays of war memorabilia, old village shops and antiques, A 'bones' display - skeletons of all types, stuffed birds, walls and drawers full of beautiful butterflies and insects just to name a few. There is no entrance fee.Something great to do on a wet day - or any day!Highly recommended
Free entry, plenty of parking and Gottfried Lindauer was on display. I felt spoiled. The Sunfish on display was very impressive, enjoyed the story about the many uses of Flax, etc. Loved that the museum had also thought of a space for the little ones by providing some books, colouring in pictures, pencils and puzzles .. very thoughtful.
Brilliant . The Maori history there leaves Te Papa in Wellington for dead. The artefacts have been handed down through whanau for generations some from 1st generation Maori in 14th century plus what they arrived with, very well displayed
The ambiance of the Whanganui Regional Museum sets the scene for a spiritual journey into the past when you enter the realm of the Maori. Awe-inspiring, tear jerking moments as you explore the wonder of whanganui maori and their love for their river, their land, their children, their world.
