Great place to visit of you are coming to New Plymouth. The beach isn't overcrowded, possibly as there isn't much of a parade but ultimately that's a good thing. There are a couple of gastro vans so you can pick up a bit of food or a flat white. There's also good playing areas to keep the kids busy. Great summer holiday location.
perfect weather (for new zealand north island) to welcome the new year, beautiful blue sky, friendly locals, great walks on the black sandy beach, with families and friends,
We are enjoying each day at Oakura Beach. We are here for a whole wonderful week. We have seen it misty, raining and in brilliant sunshine. We have walked the sands each day and revelled in the magnificent beauty of this place. We love the feel of the soft dark sand, never-ending white capped waves breaking on the beach, the many mountain-fed streams traversing the beach which make a dry footed walk a challenge ... The birds, the bush clad slopes, the walking/cycling paths make for an enjoyable outing every time. We took a path through a park to climb up to the village which boasts a friendly grocer, pharmacist, beauty salon etc plus a choice of restaurants and great fish and chips shop. We enjoyed a meal at the pub and the friendly service made the night special. A bunch of very friendly locals were watching sports events on the big tv screens in the lounge. Oakura is just a short drive from New Plymouth. We think it is one of the most beautiful spots we have ever visited.
Mid-spring evening, bad weather clearing away, low tide, and we went for a short walk with our 3 year old son which turned into well over an hour. Just stunning views, really easy walking, and the 3 giant starfish we saw were the icing on the cake. Saw a couple of brave(?) surfers out there - a bit chilly for that I would have thought! If you want an evening walk along one of the most beautiful black sand beaches you will ever see then head this way.
I really enjoyed my visit to Oakura beach. Black sand, good surf, easy access and parking. It's well worth a visit. It's part of the surfing highway. If you are not a surfer it's a great place to go for a walk early morning or evening.
Great, safe beach. Long sandy shore with shellfish at either end. Nice for swimming and for walking and watching the kite surfers.
Oakura beach is a very good place to visit in the summer time. It's very good for surfing and swimming. It's a typical west coast black sand beach. At low tide you can walk around the coast along the rocks. I've seen some amazing sunsets and sunrises. There is a very good motor camp you can stay out. It is not uncommon to have a lost penguin appear walking up to camp. Be careful it is on the west coast. You need to be able to spot the rips in the waves. Well worth a wee look
chillaxing with serene views out over the Tasman Sea. Warm rooms, beautiful beds and lovely showers. Clean and well appointed.
