Spent a week in Raglan of which most days at least 5 hours at this beach. Just watching and relaxing but also catching my first waves. After one surf lesson basics pretty clear but still lots of practice :). Prefect place for that!

Came here only for half a day so didn't venture fully into the sea, just had a paddle, but we were stunned by the amazing beach and the surfers on the water. The car park was close to the beach and surf hire, surf lessons etc were on the beach so it couldn't be easier to make the most of it. Took some of the best pictures of my holiday here.

Two seventy year olds loved body surfing. Nor sure that the waves were too exciting for the board surfers but we loved it! Good changing rooms, toilets, parking and a great beach. We picked up pizzas from the Food Department (excellent) and came back and watched the sunset. Great.

It is well known that Raglan sports some of the best swimming and surf beaches in New Zealand, and they start right here at Ngarunui. Renowned for it's black sand it's the perfect spot to spend the day wjth a picnic. Yes - there is a bit of a trek, but it is well worth the effort.

Great beach for board riders not so good for free swimmers. Location is relatively remote. The scenery spectacular.

One of the best things about living in Raglan is being able to escape work and hit the beach in the evening. A great beach, often patrolled. Raglan's most popular swimming beach.

Bit of a walk in to this beach - down a steep incline so coming back is a bit of a slog. Lifeguards were working so you can swim. Lots of soft sand even if it is a strange colour. Good place on a nice day.

Definitely the place to go if you want to learn to surf in Raglan. It has the longest left-hand break in thw world and loads of people were learning the board. So great viewing for non-surfers!

This is what summer in NZ is all about...Surf, black sand, lifesavers, long stretch of beach to wander, takes effort to get down to and back up from. Often hang gliders swooping over the beach as they catch the uplifts near here.Best to go for a few hours as the wide sealed path down is steep, so takes even more effort coming back up when you're hot and tired - just stop and enjoy the view if you get puffed. Very popular so often have to park further up in the overflow parking but a nice walk down the steps to the lower carpark - look for the sign by the statues at the top of the hill.Several tracks to lookouts in this area and well worth the effort to explore these. Glorious views up and down the remote coastline. When the tide is lower you can walk round from the harbour mouth, a great walk with the dog and family, always something different to see.

This is a great beach. The waves seem perfect for boogie boarding; long powerful waves that seem to push, rather than dump. Our kids also took a surfing lesson and loved it. The warning from the instructor was well given - "I take no responsibility if your kids drop out of school and become surfies.... The black sand can get (literally) blisteringly hot.

Supposedly the surfer noobs beach - where the waves are a little easier for beginners :) Swimming good and beach good for walks. Long stretch of sand!

Gorgeous, sprawling beach just outside of Raglan. Recommend stopping at the top (first parking lot) to enjoy spectacular views of the entire coast line.

I was amazed at the height of the tides here, so beaches and bays can change their appearance dramatically with the tides. Enjoyed the beach at low tide (wide dark sands... Took me a bit to remember the sand was black naturally and not dirty but after walking on it I like it) and the inlet at the end of Bow Street in town at high tide... Just like the locals.

We drove down and visited Raglan and were told by the ladies in the Museum that it had the Longest Left Hand Surf Break in the Southern Hemisphere. It has a lot of rips to we were told. But it is a beautiful little spot. There were no surfers the day we were there though.
