Sweetheart the croc and the Cyclone Tracy
Visually amazing, very informative. We got there on the Hop on Hop off bus, an easy way to see the best of Darwin as is this museum.
Wonderful gallery, a little way out of the CBD. Free entry - you can get there via the half hourly tour bus.
Very interesting museum, particularly the aboriginal art, the cyclone Tracy exhibit, and the (not air-conditioned) canoe/boat gallery. They have ver accomodating staff, a good cafe, and a spectacular location. Easy ride on any numer of local public buses. Highly recommend.
Worth having a visit if you have the time. The Cyclone Tracy exhibit gave you glimpse into the terrible suffering and devastation Darwin went through. Sweetheart the huge croc had a interesting life until he came to a tragic end. I had read the book about Sweetheart defending his own territory until man interfered. Many other interesting areas as well.
This was my second visit which speak volumes as I'm not much of a museum or gallery type. I love the exhibitions here and would recommend to all whom visit Darwin.
There was a very extensive exhibition about Cyclone Tracey which brought home to those of us viewing what a dreadful experience this must have been. There is also an interesting Maritime Museum located within the premises. This was different to any maritime museum we had seen as it contained vessels from surrounding islands, ie dug-out canoes and fishing vessels. There is no charge for visiting this Museum and it is well worth a visit.
The Cyclone Tracy exhibit was really interesting and really got across the devastation that the area suffered. It was very interesting to see Sweetheart the Saltwater croc and also the aboriginal artwork & history of the Northern Territorry...Definitely worth a visit.
We got here on the double decker HopOn-HopOff bus. It is FREE entry. We spend an hour here. The cyclone Tracey exhibit was fascinating and very 'personal', lots of first-hand stories and amazing photos. But this is not the only thing here. There are aboriginal artefact areas and 'Sweetheart' the 5 metre croc that died during capture and is stuffed here now! Various other fauna exhibits and the top floor has changing art exhibitions. Overall lots of interesting things to see..FYI there is a lovely waterfront cafe here, well worth coming at lunch time.
A very amazing place to view all sorts of fascinating things about Darwin, even better is that the entry is free!
Very simple but very interesting gallery and the Exhibit for Cyclone Tracy is a must see. Experiencing the sound booth of what the sound must have been like for the locals was an experience in itself. The touch screens with the voices of the locals imparting their experience was very touching and I could feel myself getting quite teary. The stuffed crocodile "Sweetheart" showed me just how huge the crocs grow up there (5.1 metres and 700 kgs) and watching the story of his sad demise made me realise that the idea was to relocate not eradicate. All is all a very good museum to wander through.
