While touring privately with Scott Ninnis, he took us to Squid Ink where we enjoyed a tasting with Tracy. She was a lovely host and very friendly and knowledgeable. I would definitely put this on your tasting tour while in McLaren Vale.
Outstanding premium quality wines. The Squid Ink is a personal favourite and if you like a red with bubbles you cannot go past the Sparkling Shiraz. 1st visit to the cellar door after buying off indent for the past 16 years. Won't wait that long again!!!
We stopped in here after receiving a recommendation from another winery. The cellar door has a living room feel to it rather than a commercial setup. The host was very relaxed, friendly and knowledgable about the wine he was serving. Some great wines and a really pleasant experience. Worth stopping by if in the area.
We saw the display for Squid Ink when we dropped into the McLaren Vale Visitors Centre. We were quite intrigued so factored a cellar door visit into our itinerary.John provided an exemplary wine tasting - relaxed, personable, individual and engaging. His pride in the wines is obvious and he enjoys showcasing a range of museum wines for tasting - not for purchase, but merely to educate your palate to the comparisons of the same wine across a number of years. We highly recommend a visit.
Great wine tasting! The owners are very hospitable, take their time to answer questions and explain about the winery and the different wines. The wines were wonderful and of great quality!
I tasted and bought a 2012 "Squid Ink". Tasted the 2009 vintage (which is no longer available for sale, but it gives an idea what my 2012 might be like in a few years). Owner happily chatted, explained and poured.
Great tasting experience, lovely sense of design in the cellar door, friendly. Great for them to share the story and taste of Squid Ink.
We recently visited McLaren Vale III Associates. There was a very good selection of wines available for tasting, and we were served by Reg, who spent a lot of time with us and was more than happy to shoot the breeze. One of the standout features of this cellar door was the opportunity to engage in a vertical tasting of the Squid Ink shiraz, which at the time of our visit was available in the vintages 2009 to 2012.It was interesting to try them back-to-back, and we bought the 2010 and 2012 vintages, which were clearly the strongest, with better cellaring potential. We also bought a bottle of Giant Squid Ink 2010, which we'll lay down in the cellar for a while. All in all, it's a cellar door worth visiting, where the service was excellent the wines rewarding.Additionally, Reg was happy to ship interstate to us not only what we purchased from III Associates, but a few other bottles we had purchased from another winery. The cellar door is more like a small shop with a counter and lacks the atmopshere of other cellar doors, but as above, both the service and wines were excellent.
We visited this winery after reading reviews of their recent win in Vienna. Their wines are top quality and presented with a great generosity of spirit. Would certainly recommend a visit if you're in the Mclarenvale.
Knowledgeable cellar door staff and terrific wines including the sublime Squid Ink range. Lots of fun to visit.
So if they can win the best shiraz at the biggest wine show in the world - isnt it the best shiraz in the world?? Well we think so, and the Giant Squid inks baby brother (or sister) Squid Ink is also amazing. The sparkling shiraz is also an excellent drop!! Can not fault this wine!! Worth dropping into - Foggo Road McLaren Flat I think they are at now - next door to the Turkey Farm. :) Which is also very good.
Attended this newer cellar door toward the end of the day and found them happy to stay open while there were people still there for a tasting. Did not taste a bad drop, with the highlights being the Grenache, the Squid Ink & Giant Squid Ink ranges. The cellar door was very busy but there was never any doubt that the staff were interested in assisting and talking to every person present. Both Reg and Mary were very helpful and it was great to taste 3 vintages of the super-premium Giant Squid Ink Shiraz ($150 a bottle, 2006-08-10) and a vertical tasting of the more affordable Squid Ink Shiraz (2008-09-10-11).One of their features was matching chocolate with particular wine styles, which was something different. Will certainly recommend to other locals and visitors as a winery well worth visiting.
