With a population of 10 in outback SA, it was this professional company that received the call from the Rescue Coordination team in CBR to send a spotter plane out to Lake Eyre to respond to our EPIRB signal. Due to car problems we required help. Although we had plenty of water & provisions there was no other way of seeking help as the UHF channels & phones could not get signals. Within an hour Talia Sheppard was circuiting overhead & we were able to relay that we were ok but would require recovery assistance. Within a couple of hours we were back at William Creek Hotel. Many thanks to Tay, Trevor, Swannie & all those that assisted with our search & rescue. Your dedication, quick response & helpfulness was greatly appreciated. When we return next time I think we will take the Scenic Flight option offered by Wrightsair. :)
After having to make an unscheduled stop at William Creek for some vehicle repairs, my partner and I decided to take a scenic flight over the Painted Hills, which is the only way to see them as they are highly protected with no public access at ground level. We were so glad we did the flight - the hills are a spectacular sight, particularly around sunset, and it was amazing to think that we were looking down on an area that is so rarely visited by anybody at all. The pilot was very friendly and informative, pointing out all the sights along the way and willing to answer all of our questions. Although I'd been a little nervous of the potential for air sickness in such a small plane I needn't have worried as the flight was smooth and comfortable. Overall a fantastic experience and one that I would recommend to anyone passing in the vicinity of William Creek.
Being an Aussie Lake Eyre has always been one of those iconic must visit places and it certainly did not disappoint. The flight over Lake Eyre (with water in it!) was just stunning but we are so glad we were convinced to do the longer flight (2 hours) and fly over the barren landscape and the painted hills, the colours were just incredible and this area can only be truly appreciated from the air, a must do!
The flight is in a Cessna aircraft. I felt re-assured as Wrightsair has been conducting scenic flights over this remote part of South Austraia for over 20 years. We wear headphones and mouthpieces, which means we can hear the commentary from the pilot, and we can ask questions. After taking off, we circle over the small township of William Creek. The vast outback stretches as far as I can see.We initially fly over Anna Creek Station, the largest cattle station in the world, at roughly 24,000 square kilometres, or in rough terms, approximately the size of Belgium. Red sand, with dry creek beds snake through the landscape. Occasionally there is a watering hole, or vehicle track which interrupts the natural landscape.Out of the flat desert landscape, a rocky outcrop of small and large hills emerges. We circle rock formations that bear a resemblance to brightly painted pyramids. Ochre and white chasms contrast with more dominant orange and red rock. This is really unique landscape. The Painted Hills are remarkable. They are located on Anna Creek Station. Their exact location is closely guarded, and to protect their fragile beauty, they are not accessible by 4WD, and can only be viewed from the air.The flight then continues, over vast outback landscape, then in the distance Lake Eyre comes into view. This is Australia's largest lake. Today it is dry, and is a great saltpan with white crystal reflecting in the sunlight. The white salt-crusted lake bed extends to the horizon. It is difficult to express the enormity of this area. The plane then touches down on the airstrip behind the William Creek Hotel. The flight was breathtaking. I enjoyed every minute of this unique outback experience.
I've travelled the world but Lake Eyre is one of the most breathtaking sights I've ever seen. In my opinion the only way to appreciate its vastness and beauty is from the sky. The beauty of Lake Eyre is like an ever changing water colour painting. It's natural beauty is unsurpassed, don't miss an opportunity to experience it.
