dip river forest reserve

The Dip River Reserve is beautiful, indeed, as described by other reviewers. The grandeur of the greenness and the rolling hills, studded with little areas of forest, makes the drive to the Falls quite spectacular. The walk to the Dip Falls is beautiful and atmospheric, lined with ancient cycads and incredibly tall trees, some of which have enormous circumference too. Some are still standing, some have fallen, but each has its own sense of being a unique and individual 'being' in the forest. The Falls themselves are in a valley reached by LOTS of steps down! So take care if your knees are vulnerable ... maybe take it slowly and rest when you feel like it. It is absolutely worth the climb, though. The rocks over which the falls splash down are stacked in large straight chunks, giving a somewhat surreal 'feel' to the place, as the backdrop of the falls has these geometric, straight-edged rocks.

On the north west coast of Tasmania about 45 kilometre drive from Stanley we saw the sign "Dip Falls" and thought that sounds interesting. After a 26 kilometre drive through lush, green pastures. What appeared to be a community of dairy farms. We entered a beautiful rain forest.We parked in the well signed parking area and walked 200m to a viewing platform to see the most amazing cascading waterfall. It was spectacular. We saw more signage "The big tree." It was 1 kilometre so we walked to it. A easy walk along a road through the beautiful rainforest. " The big tree" certainly was that it was gigantic.We walked back to the car park and descended the 152 steps to the base of the waterfall. It was even better down at the base. The climb back up required a little bit of effort but not too bad.This beautiful attraction I had never heard of before and I have lived all my life in Tasmania. A big plus it is FREE. Great place for a picnic lunch.Tasmania tourism should defiantly promote this destination as one to visit when in our state.

A very short distance further along from the Dip River Falls are half dozen or more very large old growth trees including the aptly named 'big tree'. Definitely a highlight of our Tarkine adventure and recommend a look.
