When I went to Bathurst last July 2008, I had the experience to witness real sheep and cattle show. It was really spectacular and they even let me milk one of the cows during the show. It was really entertaining! They even clipped the wool of the sheep which was amazing!

As we were many, we had a booking for just the show and lunch. On arrival the property was large, with great views and many panoramic photos were taken. We ambled around the cages to see cockatoos, rabbits, and in a large paddock wallabies and kangaroos. There were a few ducks on a man made pond. School kids played in the fenced paddocks off their bunkhouse accommodation. They were having a wow of a time. We settled in for the show and got a close up look at the merino ram and other varieties of sheep waiting. As the sheep took their place unaided I might add...oh well food was the enticement of course, we heard about the difference in their wool and what it was used for. The goats arrived and weren't sure which spot to call their area or perhaps it was their climbing nature as they scrambled around, once they were moved along by a cow and calf. They finally found their place and it was interesting to see the huge cattle come through the door on queue and just walk up to their position. The donkeys arrived together and a minature shetland pony had a big personality. We were shown the modern way of milking and a shearer clipped a sheep in under five minutes. Then we were shown how one went about classing the wool. The final AH! factor was when a two week old lamb was carried in. This show and the descriptive and oft comical talk along with it was very interesting and I couldn't help think, what a wonderful way to introduce the Australian countryside to overseas visitors of which they apparently have many. These animals are well fed, kept for this show only, pastured, have names and even the calves are learning beside their mother. Even city kids get a lot out of the stay. We had a light lunch of sandwiches which were filling and plentiful and enjoyable cakes, tea and coffee. Real country hospitality. Only wished my great nephews and nieces were with me.

All the animals were well presented and the presenter was great at explaining various aspects of the sheep and cattle. A unique and enjoyable show.

We visited Heritage Park, home of the Bathurst Sheep and Cattle Show to see what all the hoo-har was about. New owners had taken the place on and breathed new life into it, so the locals were saying. Having never been before, we could not compare our visit with anything but defintely a lot was happening around when we went there. New white post and rail fencing, a newly covered car park which was full of buses and other visitors' vehicles, a new playground was having its finishing touches and that was even before we made it to the entry office which doubles as a souvenir shop. The show is aimed mostly for the school child but the audience ranged from toddlers through to grannies so we definitely just blended in with the crowd and had a ball. The presenter gives an overview of life on the farm, talks about the different breeds of sheep of which 9 were on display, and how important they are to Australia's history and current economy. A bit of whip cracking goes on with a Brumby at the centre of attention and a quick display of k9 kudos from a working kelpie. The sheep then one by one take themselves off to their appropriate position on the podium and as they each do so a commentary is spoken about each breed. They are followed by various breeds of cows, some with calves at foot, as well as donkeys, goats and a minature pony. There is an opportunity to milk one of the cows too. A short shearing demonstration is also presented and at no time can I say I was bored. I think the show ran for just over an hour and I would definitely go back again. The performance is held in a purpose-built building so it doesn't matter what the weather conditions are you can always be protected from the elements. Afterwards Heritage Park also offers a hay-ride which goes on a 15 minute drive around part of the farm where you have the opportunity of seeing more sheep and cattle with their young if it is the right time of the year. We also spent time in the mini-zoo where we patted the kangaroo, talked to the cockatoo and fed the emus. There is accommodation available here also and a restaurant and coffee shop so if anyone is going to Bathurst, which is a monumetally historical town, do take the 8 minute drive out to Heritage Park. I am sure it will just grow and grow now and I would definitely stay there, maybe I will during the summer holidays. Loved it. <3
