If you want to visit a national park in NSW with easy access and great camping, then the Warrumbungle National Park is a great option. While still recovering from a devastating fire a couple of years ago, the park is still full of native birds and animals. A walk to the Breadknife is via a path which is partly paved is a great way to see the bush with amazing 369 degree views from the top. This can be a return journey down the same track or a circular route for the more adventurous. There are lots of other tracks for all abilities. Maps are available fro the park headquarters. Also near the headquarters is the main camping ground. This caters for groups, camper vans and tents in separate areas, all with access to hot showers. Other camping areas are also located in the park. Limited food and camping supplies are available from the park headquarters. Kangaroos, goannas, and emu can all be spotted near the camp, with all the usual noisy parrots, cockatoos, and other plentiful birds.
A fabulous tourist drive exists through the park and there are several reasonable easy walks that can be done from close to the main drive. We did a drive through after visiting the observatory and did a short walk to a lookout. It was getting pretty warm so we decided to move on.If you are going to do some day walks in the summer I'd suggest getting up early to get the cooler morning air. This will be a stop on every trip past to do all of the walks available.Driving out the south side around the southern side of the ranges back to the Newell Hwy is a great alternative to heading back to town and down the main road.
Magnificent views that are sure to leave one in awe of our fabulous planet. Plenty of camping, B & B's & farm stays available. The Warrumbungles National Park is natures treasure, a place that will leave you breathless.
An amazing place still recovering from a devastating bush fire two years ago. Gives the whole place a real atmosphere. Some easy walks good for us oldies.
We are Sydneysiders & have countless times looked out cross the 3 Sisters & Echo Point in the Blue Mountains. This piece of Australia is just as stunning & should be experienced by all Australians. We were lucky enough to see a beautiful rock wallaby on our wLk.
This beautiful park was devastated by a fire in 2012. The trails wind through the woods but animals are scarce. Views from lookouts are good but it isn't worth paying the entrance fee when views are available from the through road.Staff at the temporary visitor center was kind, but might have told us that we'd have done better to drive through rather than go on a 2 hour hike through a burned out forest and pay to do it.
did a nice walk up to spirey lookout on advice of park office. excellent views and wildlife. very humid but most enjoyable
The Warrumbungle National Park is a large park with a range of walks for all abilities. The landscape is amazing!
About a 5 hr return walk on an EXCELLENT track. Walk was a little boring but the views from the top were superb of the past volcanic activity. Take lots of water in Summer!!
This national park is very worthwhile to visit after lots of rain has fallen as all the small creeks in the park all start flowing, however watch out for leeches. The campsites often have Kangaroo's, wallabies, possums and a great plethora of bird life within them....if there has been enough rain of course. All in all I give this national park a thumbs up :-)
I visited this place in the middle of summer on a pretty hot day, but don't let the temperature put you off this wonderful place. There's plenty of shade along the way. We chose to do the Grand High Tops walk via Breadknife. While it is a fairly long trek (almost 14km return according to my phone app), it's not overly hard. The track is steady for the first 4km (we did that in under and hour) and becomes steeper after that - but it is paved and has wooden stairs all the way to Breadknife - so it's pretty flat terrain. The walk to the Grand High Tops lookout has a small detour via the Hut, but it wasn't out of the way. The final ascent up to the lookout is rocky and steep and not recommended for children or unfit people. In saying that though, the average person should find this pretty easy. Just tiring on the legs.Once you get to the top, it is well worth the trek. The view is spectacular. You look down on Breadknife and can clearly see all the other giant mountains around you. You feel like you're on top of the world as you look out forever towards the horizon. We sat here for a good half hour just taking it all in. The 360 degree views will leave you speechless. We saw a number of snakes on the walk - a red belly and 2 brown. They were a decent size too - so be wary of those little critters on the track. Apart from this, it was a very worthwhile adventure and highly recommend this hike. It took us 3.5 hours to complete with a half hour stop at the lookout and a few breathers along the way.
We had a very pleasant drive through the park and a short walk near the temporary visitors centre. As mentioned by another visitor, it is still recovering from a fire in January 2013. We are birdwatchers and saw a Buff Banded rail - according to the ranger this is the first recorded sighting since the fire, so it is nice to see the birdlife returning.
The park is obviously a very large area, much of it was ravaged by fire about 18 months ago and is still recovering, this in itself probably made it more interesting. It could take years to fully recover but seeing how quickly nature responds and how some seeds need fire to germinate was fascinating.
It still looks a bit like a disaster zone. Large areas of re-growth and large areas of just skeletons of trees. The Info Centre is operating out of a temporary building in the camping area. That fire in 2013 must have been terrifying!
We stopped here and did a very short walk. Magnificent scenery and a well maintained track. Great to see the area coming back to life after the fires. Wildflowers were out and looked so pretty.Rock formations are incredible and well worth taking many photos of.
