This small town pub certainly has small town personality. Good selection of tap beer, good wine list & great staff in an awesome location. The Hostie appreciated the casual atmosphere, we were greeted by smiles from both the bar and bistro counters. Meals and beverages are to be ordered at your leisure- but the staff do deliver which allows you to sit back in either the front bar area, picnic tables or covered courtyard (all types of weather catered for!) We started with a selection of starters (don't go past the veal and pork meatballs... Just don't.) Then as there was a group of us we had a pretty good cross section of mains with the Thai Beef Salad and Lamb Shoulder both coming out victorious. The Chef thought the price point was bang on and the portions were quite generous, whoever has taken over the reigns of this charming little establishment has certainly raised the bar. The only gripe being that we missed out on the wood fired pizzas which are served Wednesday and Thursday nights. Oh well, just means we will have to take another beautiful scenic drive back again soon... Damn!
This is one of those experiences you relish as a traveler. I'm from New Zealand and loved discovering this country pub. We came here on Australia Day 2014 for the first time and had a great day, we've been back twice since. Both times there has been live music and a good atmosphere. Would fully recommend to other travelers.
We visited the Eltham pub in April and loved the atmosphere of the place. The beer garden has a true Aussie pub feel to it and it's in a fairly quiet setting. It's hard to give an overall rating. In a nutshell, our experience was:* Atmosphere - pleasant setting (4/5)* Entertainment - excellent (4/5)* food - appalling (1/5)* service - average (2/5)The service was ok - nobody was rude and we received our meals in a reasonable time. Having said that, we didn't get a smile or eye contact out of any of the staff. I suspect the 5/5 review was written by a local.... or perhaps there's been a change of kitchen/bar staff? We hadn't read any reviews and anticipated enjoying a good pub meal. What we were served would make hospital food appealing. I had the fish and chips and my fish was bland and so overcooked that it took a great deal of time to chew. I suspect the vegetables were frozen and boiled a long, long time, as they were watery, soggy and tasteless. I can't recall what my husband ordered, only that he pushed the plate away after a few bites and said, 'Tell me yours is edible and I can share or I'm going to stay hungry.' We both stayed hungry. Despite the disappointing culinary experience we returned in the evening for the live entertainment and it was awesome! Nicole Brophy played acoustic guitar and sang, She had a great voice and a good choice of songs. ((Music to listen to rather than dance to). So if you are looking for a nice spot for a drink, to watch some live entertainment, definitely visit The Eltham! If you're after a good pub meal......go somewhere else. We found The Federal in Alstonville to serve the kind of meal you hope for in a country pub - a large serve of tasty, hearty fare.
For a country style pub my partner and I were extremely disappointed. I had scotch fillet and it tasted so awful I couldn't eat it. It was tough, had no flavour and was a strange colour. I actually feel sorry for the cow that was slaughtered for this. No love in the cooking, ingredients are not fresh and meals are overpriced. It was the worst pub food I've ever had. Certainly not worth the trip from Byron Bay!Byron local
The hotel is situated in a very beautiful, quaint setting. The staff are very friendly & attentive, especially Paula. The chef Rupert amazed us with the entrees & dinners, but his dessert taster was simply to die for. It was a wonderful night that my best friend & I will always remember. Thank you Eltham Hotel.
