My mother and I stayed the night in the lovely homestead and enjoyed the fantastic hospitality of the owners. We also enjoyed a very informative tour of the main house ( well worth the $12 fee which was part of our accommodation package !)Yes there are a couple of recent small family photos in frames ( very few in fact ) but they did not detract from the huge collection of other antiques in the house and not an issue in my opinion. It is after all a much loved home not a museum. The overnight accommodation was a very nice surprise , so clean and comfortable surrounded by the most beautiful antiques .Would highly recommend a tour or overnight stay in this historic home.
I joined a couple visting Goulburn for an inpromptu tour of Garroorigang HIstroric Home earlier this month. The couple were avid history buffs and keen to learn more about this amazing residence. Donna took us on an extensive tour of the property which included the homestead itself, the 'School for Gentlemen' and the homestead's historic rose gardens. Donna was very generous with her time and tailored her commentary to her guests. As a small group we had the chance to ask lots of questions and Donna, as a proud family member, was able to answer each one in significnat detail. In response to a few comments in previous reviews...'Not A Museum'. In my opinion, the property is a 'living museum'. Whilst not every item on display is labelled, there are plenty of written descriptions of significant artifacts and your guide provides such an extensive commentary any additonal labelling is unnecessary. 'Beware the $12 Fee'. Take a quick visit to the property's website and you will find all pricing is clearly posted. I did a quick Google search and both the local and state tourism websites linked directly back to the Garroorigang website. 'Not for Everyone'. I agree the property is not set up as a 'traditional' tourist attraction. Again, a visit to the website clearly explains what visitors can expect. If you are in Goulburn with young childern looking for an hour of entertainment followed by a snack then there a plenty of other attractions I would recommend before Garroorigong, but for anyone with an interest in Australian history I am confident there would be only a handful of properties in Australia that can offer such a strong, vibrant, coherant and ongoing narative. Who Should Visit Garroorigang? The property is prefect for events such as weddings, social club and corporate functions. The guided tour is a great way for those with even a passing interest in heritage and history to learn about one family's story and how it is woven into Australia's development.
Thank you for your feedback, which we appreciate.Garroorigang is definitely not a Museum. It is a lived in family home (unashamedly replete with photos of children/grandchildren among those of family ancestors), covering its 160 years of living Australian history. This is what makes it unique among historic homes open to the public. Although classified by the National Trust, and listed on the Register of the National Estate as a site of national historical significance, it does not benefit from any Government assistance. All proceeds from tours go to a Trust Fund for the conservation of the homestead and its irreplaceable collections. While visitors differ in terms of what interests them most in the home, during our guided tours we try to highlight the more unique and important items in the collections. No publication, local or otherwise, of which we are aware, advertises entry as free or by donation and all visitors are advised of the cost before entering the homestead. Card carrying pensioners and groups of ten or more receive a concessional rate.Garroorigang Historic HomePart of Goulburn’s early history.
I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit to our lovely home. There is so much to see in the house and so many stories that it would take several visits to hear them all. Please come again when you are next in Goulburn.
Very happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit to our historic home as part of your tour of Goulburn. We love sharing the history of our home with our visitors.
I'm sorry we weren't open when you came through in September and hope that you will return to Goulburn one day soon and be able to actually go through our historic home. We love sharing the history of our home with our visitors.
Thank you for your kind review - we are so glad you enjoyed our history as much as we do.
This wonderful old house is not really just a musuem. It is still lived in by the family and their visitors,so therefore it has a different feeling to one that is just a museum. The family will show you around and have great stories to tell of it's history. during our visit we has morning tea in the gazebo in the wobderful garden as well. A great place to visit.
An interesting historical home to visit - has been in the same family for about 150 years. And not much has changed (or been gotten rid of) over the years, which is what makes it special. If you like to step into the past, don't miss stopping by this home for a tour. How refreshing it is to find someone who enjoys and still uses things from days gone by... (I also stayed in the home overnight, as host Stuart Hume offers B&B accommodation, making my visit particularly memorable. Thank you for sharing your home, Stuart!)
