We picked the best forecast weather day during our week long stay in the Snowies for a summit attempt with the family (7yo, 9yo and GPs). One day Kosci Lift pass cost $120 for all 6 of us (family plus 2 seniors) and we caught the Kosciuszko Express chair to the Eagles Nest. Apparently the highest restaurant in Australia at 1937m but more of that later. The walking track is a prepared surface or for lots of the track to Rawson's Pass it is a metal grate. Although a steady climb, the gradient never gets too much and the walking is relatively easy. The walkways do a great job at protecting the landscape and plants along the track as there are plenty of other walkers with the same goal of reaching the roof of Australia and the surrounds are pristine. Good views along the track at the lookout points but the vista really starts to become impressive during the final climb up a spiral pathway from Rawson's Pass (where there are public toilets - also highest in Oz!) Views across to Mt Townsend and over the border to the Victorian Alps are amazing and you really get to feel that you are on the roof of Australia. Photo stop and a quick break for lunch at the trig point gave some time to catch breath and soak up the scenery. Although the winds were light and the skies were clear, the lower temp at the top required a warm fleece to be comfortable. If there is a wind blowing then bring a jacket (and hat) even in summer. Return journey was straightforward, getting us back to the comfort of Eagles Nest for well deserved beverage and an ice cream for the kids. Walking took just over 4 hours for the return journey with extra time for the chairlift. All in all, a great family day out with wonderful weather and much satisfaction at bagging the first of the seven summits - haha!
