Tried twice to get a flight and they were not open and sincelearnt that they do not even own an aircraft , ended up flying with Merimbula Air Services. They have fiveaircraft, should have gone there in the first place.Had a great flight, thanks to M.A.S.
IMHO, the most fulfilling attraction in Merimbula is 'in the air'.Whereas my wife had experienced many commercial flights in the past, she had never been in a small plane. So I took the opportunity of asking around town what was believed to be the better of the two Scenic Flight companies with all suggesting Air Sapphire.Anyway, we decided to go with their Montague Magic 60 minute flight which is wdell described on their web site but in my words:The flight delivs beauty in spades, kicking off from the neat 1.5 kilomedtre Merimbula runway, heading north along rugged rocky coastline t while also taking into view emerald green pasture lands. The flight changes direction to the east just south of Narooma and heads out over the sea to Montague Island., a tiny island supporting a community of Australian fur seals and a growing diversity of fish species thanks to the recently established marine park.Fortunately the weather was relatively kind in that there was minimal 'bucketing' from the wind; well that's what I thought. My wife on the other hand wasn't, as it turns out, having a good time of it experiencing significant motion sickness. She was a real trooper thought. The sightseeing component was fantastic with my camera almost worn out by the end of the 60 minute flight (I've yet to download them to my laptop, hence no associated images here). On the way up the coast we travelled at around 1500 feet dropping to 500 feet for the return run - perfect for spotting seals, large fish et al.The landing was quite interesting: I loved it thanks to significant turbulence dropping through the tree line, and thanks to the wind we came in on around a 10-15 degree angle. The pilot though did a terrific job.Highly recommended.
