We were staying in Wee Jasper for the weekend, from Sydney. Had heard of the caves and were blown away by the caves themselves and the great guy who runs the tours. We had been to Jenolan caves and caves overseas and in comparison we got great value for money for a magnificent cave experience (it was the first one for our 8yr old son). The caves were beautiful and the guide was a lovely gentleman with a colourful sense of humour who managed to involve each of us in the very informative and educational tour! It felt like time stood still as we were transported into the history of the caves and the various visitors it has hosted since being discovered. By the end of the tour we felt that we had travelled in time and our son had a personal interaction with history and geology that cannot be matched by modern day technology! Thank you Geoff and God bless and give you good health to continue your input into making this world a better and wiser place! Anna and Family
after a short drive from Canberra to Yass ... Then a longer trek out to Wee Jasper we finally arrived at Carey's Cave. Wasn't really what i expected, but went in with open mind. The tour guide,Geoff was running late, having got a flat tyre on the way in.When we did finally get going Geoff had a talk with us outside the cave, explaining the landscape features and a bit about caves ... In essence setting the scene. I suspect a few in the party were getting a bit restless, but it was good info setting us for the cave experience.Going into the cave was down a step descent of 30'steps, but nothing terribly onerous, and we entered the first chamber. Geoff's thought was that we should be afforded plenty port unity to appreciate all the features of the cave and he explained the features in terms so they were easily understood by everyone. His Humour was pretty much in the vein of the bushes, and I think some of the people who may have been from o/s didn't quite understand some of it ... But I found it to be a good, charming addition to the conversations. This is a great little gem hidden away behind Yass, but one I think should be sought out wanting to experience something authentic and not hyped for the tourist market.
We had a great time visiting the cave system today. It was eye opening and made more so with excellent commentary from Geoff.Arriving at 12pm, we quickly paid our fees (which $15.4 for adults) and listened to a brief introduction from Geoff under some shade. From there we walked to the cave entrance and went inside. It was fairly cool inside (about 16C according to Geoff) so make sure you bring a jacket. Geoff was very informative in telling us about the cave system, how it was formed and all the different characteristics (such as bacon lol). The tour took around 2 hrs which is very good value for money and we saw a number of formations and had plenty of opportunities to take photos. On this part, make sure you get here on time for the first session or you might wait longer for the second one. There was also an opportunity for a group photo from Geoff at the end. Overall, highly informative, good scenery (including a bat inside the cave).Just a note though, Geoff has an unique sense of humor. It isn't intentional but I think it can offend many people. He probably should keep remarks about country, race, religion etc to a minimum. For example, he made a remark about the quality of Chinese candles because it wasn't lighting up. But one could have easily said you should have bought better candles lol. Anyway, don't let this distract you. He I think us a good guy. There are also packets of chips for $2 and $4.5 respectively.Go have a look.
went on the midday tour today, had a great time and learnt a lot about the beautiful cave system. Guide really knows his stuff and has a great twisted sense of humor which makes the tour really enjoyable.
Carey's Caves at Wee Jasper - ancient, inspiring, subterranean place. Friendly guide Geoff, a wealth of information. Coolness of the caves a real contrast to the heat of a summer's day. A remote location, you can 'hear' the silence. A real Australian country experience. Shady area to sit that catches the available breezes. Time should take a back seat out here. Best to bring own food and water. Loved it, an adventure. We came by car from Yass. We stocked up for our picnic lunch and petrol there.
We drove out to wee jasper on Monday afternoon and what a wonderful afternoon it turned out to be. We were given a tour by a fantastic guide (Geoff) who was really engaging & informative, with a fantastic knowledge of both the cave and area. The tour was fabulous as we took our time exploring the different areas of the cave. The guide was clearly very passionate about getting everyone involved and tailored the tour to our interests. I would recommend this tour to everyone, with very few steps it is a really accessible tour which offers a fabulous experience to visitors young and old! Thank you for a fabulous day!!!
While camping in Wee Jasper, the family decided to check out a nearby place called Carey's Cave. What a great little place. It was a stinking hot day, but once under the hill that holds this wonder we were all cool and happy. The caves themselves are a wonder to behold. Water leaking and dripping into the limestone have created shapes, forms and colours of infinite wonder and shape. As an attraction, it has been set up in the most professional way with safe walking trails and floodlighting which adds both mood and guidance to your every step. The guide was a wealth of information and had a patient and amiable way about him.Well worth going to if your in the area, or given it's only a short drive from Canberra it is well worth the day trip.
These caves have excellent examples of every cave formation you can possibly find in any other cave in Australia and very well worth a look. It is a bit of a trek to Wee Jasper but if you take a packed lunch and snacks you can find a pleasant spot to enjoy them near the tiny outpost of Wee Jasper, before continuing onto the cave site. The cave site is more remote and in open countryside and in summer quite hot. There is more shade back in Wee Jasper. The tour guide Geoff was very knowledgable. HOWEVER, he took forever to impart this knowledge and really could have done so in half the time. I felt very sorry for the people with young children, who were becoming very restless after the first HOUR! The tour was one hour late in starting and lasted two hours. Way too long. Geoff was very pleasant, but if he cut out a lot of the silly humour about some of the cave formations looking like wrinkly grandparents, and getting rid of annoying teenagers down holes ad nauseam, we would have been finished in a more sensible time. Most people go to caves for the Geological & Speleological aspects, not for witless long winded humour.
Carey's caves is a short drive from canberra and well worth the trip.My small family of 3 had a great time listening to Geoff and exploring the caves .Geoff's knowledge of the caves and surrounding area is excellent, and his tour is very interactive and informative. The caves themselves are brilliant, the access is easy and the tempreture perfect on a hot 32 degrees day.I been to a few caves tours and by far this is the best so far.
We visisted last week with our two young children and we loved it! About an hours' drive from Yass, it is definitely worth the drive. We were stoked at the depth of knowledge of the guide and the value of the ticket. I did not expect that we would be in the cave for a full 40 minutes.Tip - bring a light cardy - it's about 12 - 15 degrees in there!! AND A CAMERA :)
The caves are great, the guide was interesting (a little rough in his patter, but engaging and probably more interesting because less polished), and you get value for the money - check the website for opening times and maps. There is an educational section of the tour, that allows people to pick up and look at different types of rocks and the kids on the tour seemed engaged. It is well worth the trip. We drove from Canberra via Mountain Creek road - there is a short stretch of dirt around 3km, which is very passable by 2WD and quite scenic, but windy. There are nicely maintained flushing toilets at the site, nice shady area - but bring a picnic, only chips and icecream are available at the kiosk, and nothing is open in Wee Jasper at the moment (the general store and the pub were both closed). We returned via Yass, which is slightly less windy (noting the worst can't be avoided as its the last 30 km into Wee Jasper) but longer - but good if you want to make a day of it and visit wineries etc.
We all had a ball, even the grumpy teen. I recommend to all, but go with a sense of humour. Thank you Geoff for yet again an interesting and informative tour.
We have been to there through yass valley from canberra. And returned to canberra through mount creek drive. The return journey was 1 hour less so if anyone want to go there please take the alternate route. There is about 5-6 km of unpaved road but can be driven by 2WD vehicle. Last 30km drive is very very steep and sharp turns over the mountain. SO very very careful while driving and be cautious about opposite vehicle. This place is really really very nice to enjoy the nature and have picnic with family. The cave is a attractive place for those who loves rock formats. If you enjoy driving through mountain and love to visit caves I strongly recommend you to visit this place. Be sure you bring your own food as there is no restaurants on the way.
We arrived early to find clean easy accessible toilets and a shaded area although primitive was very accommodating. There is not very good mobile coverage but a handy couple off power points to recharge those electronic devices. The office caters for basic refreshments and souvenirs. The cave is fantastic and the guide very knowledgable. This experience was very memorable. This is one one of those experiences that you will remember for a long time. Thouroghly enjoyed this adventure.
We arrived at the cave spot it has a toilet area the the shed where the office is offers basic potato chips and ice blocks plus some souvenirs. The guide was Nic a lovely guy told us some history then down to the cave he told in detail the different things to look for which was excellent.Maybe a little long but we were never board. Its an Amazinig compact cave.
