We visited on a recent tour of the Tablelands. After a nice chat with the owner, we headed off to one of the side coves where we were treated close views of several platypus paddling about. They aren't really spectacular to look at but such unusual mammals that I'd heard about first as a child an really wanted to see. The park has an interesting history. The owner originally intended to use the site for crawfish ponds which he planned to harvest and sell. Then he was invaded by platypus which recognized a good food source so they stayed and flourished. So...now the site is a platypus viewing area with fishing for locals.
I have visited a couple of places where we were told you could see platypus is the wild but to no avail, This place was different we got to see a platypus in the wild so close to the city . we got feed the ducks and watch the platypus duck and dive .
They really shouldnt guarantee sightings - we sat by the pond for over half an hour to only see turtles. Was very disappointed husband claimed to have seen one but as neither my daughter or I saw it we are not sure we can belive him
The owner was very informative. We had several sightings (albeit at a distance)Great value (5$ per adult) and if you see one, you can keep going back free of charge. At least, that is what they say! you do have to keep your ticket, of course.
Looking for somewhere to pull up when travelling through Atherton, Platypus Park is a good spot, plenty of parking, undercover free bbq, feed the fish, turtles and ducks, check out the old steam engine, toilets and picnic tables, short walking track and you might spot a platypus, very short walk to the Old Post Office Gallery and Chinese Temple Museum both worth a look there is also a fenced dog exercise park just after the Temple.
The park was ok, but because of the lack of rain the pond was really dry and there were a total of 2 ducks. Go when it's wet, it may be different.
Nice quiet picnic area but we have never seen a platypus. A nice break to take the children as there are ducks to feed and fish to spot.
