The house is beautiful to look at but when you walk in you are overwhelmed with so many artifacts and items to look at. It is a great place to visit and learn about the history of Charleville. If you have the time make sure you have a chat to one of the volunteers who work there as they are a wealth of information!
A group of 6 travelled around Queensland for two weeks and we found ourselves in Charleville on a 44 degree day - quite common. We visited the Historic house - and what a collection! It really needs someone to sort through it and display these 'lost treasures' in a meaningful way. There is a lot of local history - but it does not tell a story. Also concerned about its vulnerability to fire and theft.
I enjoyed the museum, which at first seems to be like most country town exhibits. It contains not only the usual area based history and artefacts, but a collection of restored musical instruments.Ironically, the restorer (and curator) allowed me to play the old foot pump organ, and he also demonstrated the "history" of music with other instruments he played and heritage players (wax cylinders, gramophones, etc).A wonderful and unexpected experience.
This place is oozing history at every turn. The volunteers are so passionate to share past glories and stories of this town and it surrounds. A rail ambulance, replica Cobb & Co coach to state several pieces on display so important to the area. Take the time to browse the rooms with all the bits and pieces we no longer see.
