We recently stayed with my niece near Mossman and learned the delights of this beautiful area. In particular Mossman Gorge is very beautiful, full of plants, wildlife (we saw a snake and bush turkeys) and the sight and sounds of the water rushing through the gorge made for delightful walking and exploring. The water is cold enough to be a real swimming delight after a hot, sweaty walk up, although now there is a bus that takes you to the foot of the gorge itself. There is also a visitors centre selling nice food and of interest regarding the history of the area and the local people.
the whole area is fabulous amazing ecology large trees would definitely recommend a dip in one of the pools there
I was here 21 years ago when once you could park at the top and there was no such thing as bus fees.Today this simple gorge and rainforest is still beautiful. They have now cashed in the tourist dollar by adding a cafe and information centre. A fee of $8.50 per person return by bus or walk 45 minutes to the gorge is the only way to visit. No welcome, no customer service, no National Park Notes when requested. No interaction with the staff. The Bus driver was not engaging and didn't seem very enthusiastic. Nice new information centre. Glad to see tax money is being used effectively. Oh there is a Staff Training Centre! Useless if it's not being used effectively and no supervisor! Probably sitting at home! The 2.5 km walk is worth while. But the walk at Josephine Falls is better on the Atherton Table Lands, as well as Milla Milla Falls, where there are no fees and you can enjoy a swim, Free!
I have to say that this was probably the highlight of my trip to far north Qld. My friends and I visited the gorge on a 30degree day, so we were looking froward to cooling off in the gorge. You have to park your car at the informatiom centre and either walk to the gorge (30min each way) or catch a shuttle bus ($8 return; funds go to the local Indigenous Community). We walked to the Gorge as the weather was lovely and the walk is mainly through the rainforest. Upon seeing the Gorge for the first time, I was amazing by it's beauty and size. The water was delightfully cool and the bottom is basically sanding with some smooth rocks/Boulder submerged or standing of the water. I had no trouble swimming with the current...and the information centre had advised visitors not to swim on the day we visited. Honestly, the water current was not at all dangerous and I am not a strong swimmer. However, It's common sense not to jump off large boulders into the water when you cannot judge the depth or what is submerged. Had such a fun day swimming and climbing the boulders. We spent most of the day at the gorge. As the it is a freshwater gorge, there are NO crocodiles. It's one of the only inland places you can swim without risk of crocs. There is a nice lookout and rainforest walkway.
Great way to spend a few hours - even better if you go on a day that you can swim. Possibly a bit expensive but it is a really well maintained area. Well suited for families with young children, especially on a hot day. The water is beautifully cool and refreshing!
Back in the 1980’s you could just drive up to the car park and walk to the gorge. These days there is a visitors centre selling souvenirs and Aboriginal Art and a café. You will be required to purchase a ticket for the 10 minute bus ride to the car park costing $8.50. They have constructed an extensive boardwalk through the rain forest crossing the river, and a 2km rainforest circuit with information boards along the way, and a great place to swim in the Mossman river. It could be a pleasant day out walking through beautiful rainforest, but as far as world heritage sites go, this so called “gorge” is no match for the spectacular Iguaçu Falls in Argentina, or for a national comparison, the Katherine Gorge in Central Australia. In conclusion, the infrastructure is well done, good bathroom facilities, café etc, the bus runs every 15 minutes and they’ve done a good job constructing the walkways through the forest, but spectacular it is not. Still, it is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
You most definitely need to visit Mossman Gorge when you are up north!!The place is run by indigenous Australians who are knowledgeable about the area and will answer any questions you have. There was a sign saying the community preferred if you did not walk to the gorge and instead took a bus ( for a fee ). I don't understand a lot about the indigenous culture, but when they recommend something for us to follow, I take their lead as this is their land. I was upset to see backpackers walking through their townships. Once you arrive at the top of the gorge there is a beautiful wooden path you walk along which directs you to the water to swim in or further paths up the way.I would definitely recommend a few hours here to walk the paths and take a quick dip in the water. The water is a little rough in some areas so please be careful and only swim where you see other people. This walk is great in either the wet or in the dry, so don't worry if its raining when you visit. We spotted lots of lovely lizards running through the floor of the rainforest. What a treat!
I visited Mossman Gorge, about an hour's drive north of Cairns, on Monday March 9 in the late afternoon. We purchased a round trip shuttle bus ticket to take us to the top. Arriving at the top we started to walk on the well constructed elevated walkway to the view point. It's a dense rain forest (with lots of insects - be warned!) with lovely views from a number of locations. Most people came ready to swim, but we did not. We had been told the shuttle bus back down ran every 15 minutes - and the large sign at the pick up point said the same thing. We arrived at 4:28pm, just as a bus was leaving the "tour group" departure area. About 15 minutes later another bus came by, but waved at those of us waiting at the regular stop and went straight to the tour stop. Before they left a guide yelled out "another bus will be here in a minute". At 5pm another bus rode past us and headed straight to the tour stop ignoring the 10 paid passengers waiting. I decided enough was enough and walked over to the tour bus stop. The driver, after loading the tour group, said "I was here 15 minutes ago" when I said we'd all been waiting for almost 30 minutes. He eventually let all of us on, but it felt like individual ticket purchasers were treated like second class citizens. That experience tainted what would otherwise have been a lovely afternoon and experience.
The gorge is beautiful, the water perfect for swimming and the walk is a really nice rainforest walk. The centre and gorge is run by indigenous people who are happy, knowledge and helpful. The cafe has reasonable prices. I've seen reviews criticising the entry price - get over it. It's cheaper than the cinemas and twice the entertainment! We were there over 3 hours walking, swimming and having morning tea. The walk is not for the frail and in the wet season not for the faint hearted but it's really not that hard and is probably just the right length (I did very much appreciate the swim at the creek part way through the walk).
I just don't get the review preceding this one, complaining about cost and access. The Gorge and access and services are just brilliant! For the very small fee (only for the short bus trip) or after a free walk (mmmm bit long on a hot day - caution) the Gorge provides boardwalks over the forest floor, bridges over and to the creeks and rivers, a nice park at the start and quiet without loads of cars at a carpark where you commence your walk. The small fee enhances the experience and protects and safeguards. The Gorge is brilliantly managed and something quite special. There is a meal/drinks cafe at the base of the Gorge where both the food and drinks are as good as anything back in MossmanOne of the very best natural park areas you will find in Oz.Well done to the region and owners for this site
