One of the local's favourite places. Lovely parks with BBQs and shady trees. Best to take your own seats as it is a popular place. Great for water sports including canoeing, fishing, water-skiing & swimming in designated areas. Take a picnic or BBQ lunch and enjoy the beauty of the outback - sunset is the best time. There is a bike track for kids in one park with a few picnic huts but plenty of BBQs to share. Around the back there is a playground and lots of birds (including peacocks) and often kangaroos. There are native walks there (take plenty of water & protective clothes - be aware & prepared for sunburn and dangerous creatures such as spiders, snakes & ticks). The lookout and dam wall are nice easy walks too but have steps - the view is still good from the lookout carpark though. The downfall really is that you can't camp there.
With the recent rain this Lake is filling up fast and more beautiful than ever before. A visit to the Lake Moondarra has to be on any tourists to do list. Fresh Water Crocodiles are present along with many opportunities for fishing. Picnic, BBQ and playground facilities are available for use. Local canoe club based here. Visit the resident peacocks in the Northern Park which roam free in the area. The lake is available for recreational use and you will often see wakeboarders out and about.
people in mt isa have a lot of fun on the lake but for most of the town folk they buy their drinking water as the lake has mud which has the lead fallout from the mine. but in saying that a lot of people use it
If you're travelling through Mt Isa a visit to the lake is a must and much desired view in hot and dusty Mr Isa. Really impressive location with nice shady picnic areas. Make sure you check out the zone with the peacocks too.
No fish for us here :( but we had a chance to clean out the car/boat on the grass and wash down some things from a nearby tap. Shower was in the clubhouse on the way to lookout- dirty but functional. Lookout was nice, and the park on the other side of the dam wall was wonderful and full of peacocks! Great place for families.
The turnoff to the lake is 16km before Mt.Isa, heading in from Camooweal and is clearly sign-posted.It is a nice spot for a walk and stop-over, but is mainly for boating, fishing, water skiing and other water sports.
Pleasant place to relax by the water and birdwatch, shaded picnic areas and toilets. Make sure you slap on the insect repellant
We made the trip, got some one to look after the dog. Only to find people there clearly ignoring the no pets allowed signs that are everywhere ( god knows why). If we go back and have the dog with us, we most likely to also ignore the no pets signs. A shame really as we would have liked to have stayed longer, had a picnic etc
Sunset visit a must, if you have a 4wd explore some of the back tracks, we found some great look outs and back waters.
Even though the dam is at only 26% capacity it is worth a visit. The scenery is spectacular and the view from the lookout is beautiful.
Amazing .......a must visit whilst in " The Isa " ..take a blanket , and just be in this amazing place .
This is a great spot for a picnic. There are a number of covered picnic tables in the area as well as BBQ areas. We just took some sandwiches out there and enjoyed a peaceful lunch watching some of the boats and waterskiers. It is only a short drive from Isa on a sealed road.
Enjoyed a picnic by the lake. Couldn't swim because of the low water level and the weed close to shore. Lots of birds to watch and listen to and saw some ant-lions waiting for a feed
Make sure you have a good drive right down below the dam wall, there's a little gem of a playground there complete with birdlife. The view from the top above the wall is sensational - the whole basin behind the dam is breathtaking. Until there is a lot more water the views will be the main attraction.
You drive out to this place thinking what could be here that would be worth the look, you then get there and it has some awesome spots for the families that live in town to go and relax, it is their very own oasis, water skiing, fishing, picnics, and fantastic views, well worth the drive
