The road to the dig tree was terrible, loads of corrugations in the 14kms from the highway. The campground is very spacious, though a long way from the dunny (so don't be in a hurry) and you pay a fee for one day which covers you for upto a week as well,. Very historical place to visit and a great slice of Australian history and gives you an insight of how explorers were back in those days. Peaceful and quiet and you can fish in the river if you want to.
It's a hard road in, very rocky and slow going (we were pulling a van). Good to see as it's a big part of the area's history but flies were awful. The carving in the tree is fabulous but it's one of those things where I am glad I have done it but never have to go back.!
Flew in here on an outback trip. There is a dirt runway near the tree. Ranger met us on landing and drove us to the tree (only 150m away). Great historical location where Brahe buried his cache of food whilst the expedition continued on; he then carved location details in the tree. Nearby is the Face Tree, where an amazing face was carved in 1898. $11 per vehicle (or aircraft) for the visit. Lots of written text about the history of the site. Pit toilets on site, but not much else. 71 kms by road from Innamincka (nearest town) - not near Thargomindah as listed on trip advisor.
This is an important historical location of the pioneer spirit. Burke and Wills past by Dig Tree in 1861 which ended in dispair & ultimately their death. We were welcomed by the elderly ranger and his faithful dog. He explained how the hut and grounds had been upgraded and refreshed our memories about the story of Dig Tree.$11 is both the entry and camping fee to keep this historical site in good repair. We camped along Cooper Creek and marvelled at the wildlife and quiet. The kids took their boat into the water for a row while I photographed the Welcome Swallow mud nests on the side of a Coolibah Tree. There was excitement when an eagle swooped onto a small flock of four ibis, but was unsuccessful as the ibis got away. Galahs, Cockatoo, budgies, Pelicans and many other birds sung, floated, nested and flew over our campsite.Bins are provided onsite and a pit toilet is located at the main hut upon entry. There is no power or water, so come prepared.
