Went for a wander through the botanical gardens - unfortunately we missed the opportunity to take a guided tour, but we really enjoyed the afternoon spent here. There is currently some work being done so many routes are closed but this didn't make the walk any less enjoyable. Take bug spray as there are so many mosquitoes about! This is the only place I had gotten bitten in the week in Cairns!
Take a bus from Cairns city not far down the Captain cook highway to the Cairns Botanical Gardens. Stroll around the gardens and see all the beautiful flowers and plants from Far North Queensland. Can get humid amongst the plant life but a lovely place to sit and ponder.
Every time I have ever come to Cairns I come here. Even on a stinking hot day it's just so relaxing. I especially love the Board Walk through the Rainforest and I always see some sort of wild life here, from birds, to crabs on the edge of the river, mud skippers etc.. This time we had our two teenage boys with us and even they liked it. I'll be back for sure - Plus it's FREE! :-)
The gardens are not huge but there is enough to keep you walking for 2-3 hours. Lots of walkways and paths. The cafe in the gardens was excellent, the waffles are huge! Enough to share. Get bus 131 from Cairns centre (we got on at Lake street) takes about 7 mins.
This botannical garden has a lot of sections! I started in the Gondwana evolution section and was immediately impressed. Start away I saw native birds mentioned on the info boards and a few different types of butterflys. Some sections need a little TLC but it's a free garden so to be expected. Nice art gallery and rainforest Boardwalk. Bring insect repellant! I got eaten alive and they HURT!
Beautiful plant life in gorgeous surroundings, unfortunately work was ongoing to build a new conservatory. Excellent transport link via bus number 131 from central Cairns, free entry but donation box available. Thoroughly recommend.
I bicycled through here. Gardens are beautiful, but there were just too few people for me to feel safe.
Recommended! Free parking. Nice shady cafe. If you are lucky, you might find one of the free tour guides walking the gardens - so informative and interesting! Been here twice (2 different trips I visited Cairns)- and the second time was so much better with the tour guide. Plenty of walks, too,on the other side of the road- through the bush on raised walkways. Take bug spray and water - it can get hot. Ticks - several ticks landed on our son out of one tree!! So wear a hat, and spray all over with repellant.
It was our first day in Cairns, with one of us suffering jetlag, so this was a nice, gentle introduction. We caught the bus from the city centre, and it took about ten minutes to the gardens. We found them pleasant rather than spectacular, but there were many interesting plants. The walk to the lakes was lovely too. We had seen pretty much all there was to see well within three hours. One downside was the cafe, which was overpriced. While most of the serving staff were pleasant and friendly, one was totally obnoxious (she knew best, not the customer, and made that very clear) and that really put us off the place.
Amazing Botanical Gardens, one of the best I have ever seen. Highly recommended for lovers of tropical palms and plants. Beautiful layout, with meandering tracks.
