Went here at night via the ferry from manly. did a 'ghost tour of the island. Spooky but very interesting! great to hear forgotten tales of prisoners here in queensland! so close to home! Definitely worth a visit.
The history on St Helena is worth a visit. great day out. The boat trip is lovely , theres a bit of walking but for anyone who is interested in history they would enjoy this, the conditions that the prisoners had to live in is very hard to imagine.
So much to learn about our early history here. . take the boat along the Oxley River to St Helena Island. . So much to explore and the commentary is extremely informative. .
A great day trip, with a 30 min ferry ride from Manly, Brisbane. The day we went was very hot,but water is provided by the tour leaders. Remember to take a hat (or umbrella for shade), insect repellant for horseflies, and sunscreen. There are no shops on the island, so bring any snacks needed. A packed lunch is provided and we partook of this under the welcome shade of the mango trees. A most informative tour of life on the island during its time as a penal settlement. Ruins of the prison, sugar mill and lime pits are still standing.
Great day trip for the family which is not to far out of the city. Remember your Hats, Sunscreen and plenty of water. Today was incredibly hot 37c - guides provided extra water along the way - and also helped older people, and young families that were exhausted a shuttle back to the boat. Really informative history tour about life in Brisbane I had no idea about. Must to visit & we will be back again - definitely when it's cooler !!!
It was a wet, windy night as we were on the boat on our way to St Helena Island for the ghost tour. The rain cleared as we walked around the island with our guide, using our torches. The actors and guides were great. The island is an amazing place. The only disappointment was the "buffet" meal...some cold meats and bland salads. If you can look past the food it is a great night of entertainment.
This island in Morton Bay was a complete surprise to me. It's a historic site, a ruined prison, a farm, a gloriously beautiful island. The boat trip and guides - smiling, genuine, very informative chaps in costume - were lovely; both charming rather than polished. On arrival the long walk along the jetty delivers you to a lush island farm, with both wallabies and cows roaming freely. Wallabies! Cows! And mosquitoes - you must pack some bug spray, sunscreen and a hat to enjoy the day. It's important to know that this is a walking tour, which I really wouldn't recommend for kids under 6 or the elderly, especially on a hot day. My 8 and 13 year old boys loved it.
We travelled here on a motorised catamaran - The Cat-o-nine Tails.A great trip on Morton Bay with good commentary. Lunch was supplied and was reasonable albeit not that appertising. The Island guided tour was entertaining and educational. It was a very hot and humid day - I feel the guides should have supplied drinking water (either free or to be paid for) for the participants on the long walk around the island
What a great day. The staff (or prison guard and prisoners) create an informative and fun day on this island 30 mins from Brisbane. Simple but healthy lunch provided with beverage options. Such a surprise - a big recommendation from me.
Had a fantastic day trip to St Helena. Had our 16 yr old and 12 yr old with us and thought it might be hard work but we all had a great time. Very professional, funny, informative and even a nice lunch. We had a voucher so it was good value too. Would definitely recommend.
Great trip, crew and guides first class. Very humorous informative narrative of life that was on this penal colony. The "guard & prisoner 31" were excellent & made absolutely sure, that any questions were answered.Lunch was a simple meat & salad but very enjoyable under the shade of some mango trees. The only downside on arrival was the lack of signage at the jetty with much confusion about where the tour embarked. Also my wife & our friend did not appreciate the comments from Captain Jeff when they boarded carrying takeaway coffee. Apparently you are not supposed to take coffee on board as they sell it on the boat! We were not late boarding & had travelled for two hours to get to the jetty so thought we were entitled to a cup of coffee? He was quite over the top with his comments, incessant & very rude! Nevertheless we would recommend this tour to anyone who wishes to inform themselves about Brisbane's penal history.
Excellent day trip to St Helena Island With Cat O Nine tails tour.2 X Fantastic tour leaders. Very informative and enjoyable. Top marks. Will definitely recommend to all.
I have wanted to go to see St Helena for years so when a deal came up I thought this was a good opportunity so 2 friends and myself spent a wonderful day there, we learnt a lot and had also had a very relaxing day. The 2 guys that did the re-enactment were great, I felt sorry for them as it was such a hot day. Incredible history on that island so close to the mainland, very sad stories as well. Well worth the trip, have talked other friends into going as well.
I really enjoyed my trip to St Helena Island, It holds a lot of history and the guide on the island makes it a fun and very interesting day. Firstly you take the ferry from the mainland at Port of Brisbane and enjoy a fun trip , the crew rustle up tea/coffee/cold drinks and biscuits for the short ride to Moreton Island- St Helena Island. After your guided tour you will then have free time to explore the island at your ledger until it is time for your return trip on the boat back to Brisbane.
It is supposed to be haunted, with the ghosts of many a dead prisoner from the days that the Island was a prison colony. However, the evening trips on the cruise boat, together with the scrumptuous meal provided on the trip make for a wonderful guided tour through the ruins (and ghosts). A venture well worth the little expense.
