At the Winton Wetlands offers, there is a very nice walk of a few kilometres through pasture land and alongside the lunette to a spot known as The Spit. This walk passes some special Indigenous scarred trees. The Spit itself is an eroded piece of high ground jutting out into the waters. It's a lovely place for quiet contemplation and watching bird life. You can walk to The Spit by the marked track from the car park and return walking along the waters' edge. There is clear signage at the car park.
Winton wetlands is a good birding site especially for raptors. The best entry point for birding is off the old Sydney Road, (L)Bowers Rd/ (Rt) Nelson Rd/ (L) Gould Rd/Ashmead Rd on the south edge. However there is no signage at the start of Bowers Rd entry until you actually get to the park. Watch for trains crossing the railline - it is a well used line and there are no lights or boom for the railway and visibility towards Benalla along the line coming out of Winton WL is very restricted.
We had some time to kill on our road trip so, noticing the wetlands marked on my iPad map, we decided to check it out. We did the lovely 2.6 km Green Hills Walk, accompanied by the ever-present raucous sulphur-crested cockatoos, on what was a gorgeously warm spring day. We were impressed by the signage for such a quiet little place, though more markers for the walk itself would have been good. We'll probably explore it again on another of our trips South.
The Wetlands are a gorgeous tract of wilderness. My wife and I were there last weekend as part of a group involved in revegetation for the Regent Honeyeater Project.
