Love this place , everything for the renovator of old buildings, but an interesting place to go for a browse. Like all the bits and pieces that you can find. Staff all very friendly.
This place should be a tourist attraction in its own right. Things from our childhoods are there for sale. Thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon spent amongst these treasures even buying a few things that were very reasonably priced. For those restoring heritage houses this place would be a godsend, from old brass light switches to decorative handles and locks on doors.
I didn't know this marvellous big barn of a store existed until I spotted it while exploring on foot. Judging from the number of people inside it's well known, and I'm told customers travel from as far away as Melbourne for special items. Along with all the usual smallish, vintage bits and pieces needed by owners of older properties, The Restorers Barn has some huge decorative and novelty items for gardens and interiors.
Our favourite place to spend an hour in Castlemaine is the Restorer's Barn in Mostyn Street. This time we were actually looking for something specific - a replacement etched-glass reading lamp shade. After unsuccessful attempts to secure one in the local lighting stores - "Sorry, but that is a 1970s model!", our thoughts immediately went to the Restorer's Barn as they likely place to find one. So on our recent trip we did indeed find a suitable replacement and at a reasonable price, but that still left time to have a wander as we usually do. There is such an eclectic mix of household and other items, that it is sometimes difficult to know where to start. Do yourself a favour if in Castlemaine and take the short walk up the road from the main shopping strip - its only a half block away - and visit this wonder of everything building and more.
We LOVED the Restorers Barn... and so will most anyone who is interested in quirky antique stores... vintage tools and wood-working... and just fascinating STUFF. Check it out... you'll be glad you did!
We were all eyes at the range and amount of stock at the restorers barn as well as old furniture and treasures. Well laid out and even if not renovating an old place it's a fascinating place to visit.
From tiny nuts and bolts up to huge pieces of out door furniture, through bizarre things like airplanes and kids toys and ceramics you can find almost anything you need for that house youre doing up. Ok that sounds like a bunch of other antiques places, but this one has some real old stuff that might help you complete your period property. Its not all perfect tho... we noted a bunch of modern stuff in here that you could buy for less than half the price in the high street... Aldi Workzone 'handy box' of hose clamps at $19.95, meh... thats a total rip off when next week they will be <$10 in the catalogue. My advice, shop wisely and know what youre buying, else wander around open mouthed in wonder like the rest of the 'shoppers', its quite a breath taking array of cool stuff.
