We made a detour through Cobden on our way down to Port Fairy. We had heard a lot about the trains but our experience exceeded all expectations. This was fun at it's best for the entire family. The scenic backdrop and both the quality and length of the track are a credit to volunteers that operate this.

Cobden Rotary Club put on a New Year's Eve celebration every year which is held at the Cobden Miniature Railway. The evening is open at 5.30 where families can bring a picnic for their dinner and set up on the grass with rugs and camp chairs, or people can purchase reasonably priced food and drinks. There is a carnival type of atmosphere as the night progresses. Lots of rides to entertain the children are available, and stalls are set up selling a variety of goods. A sound stage is set up where everyone is entertained by musicians and bands, and this year a 14 year old magician entertained the crowds, with his incredibly polished act. The miniature trains operate all night. The trains are a delight to ride anytime of the day by both adults and children, but are very special at night because this service is only available on New Years Eve. The miniature trains are run by volunteers and normally operate on the 3rd Sunday of the month, all Sunday's in the school holiday and by booking.To top the family type evening, a fireworks display is booked to set off about 10 pm, which allows families and dairy farmers to go home. It even allows you to be home for mid night viewing of the capital city fireworks display. For those who choose not to leave early, the entertainment including the trains continue until mid night, where a countdown to New Years Day is carried out over the PA system.
