There are an extensive variety of plants and trees either side of the walkways through the gardens and you can either take a walking tour with commentary, or hop on the train which makes regular circuits of the gardens, also with commentary by a real human, not a recording! This made the history of the place come alive for us when we learned the origins of plants in the various areas, from around the world. If you just want to relax there are plenty of opportunities for this on the grass. But don't miss out on this if you are near St Kilda.

Yes it is small by most standards, but equally beautiful.....we had our wedding ceremony there is 2102 & it was just perfect, have never eaten at the cafe, but it does look good. To just sit & watch the world drift past is truly a wonderful thing, picnics, laying in the su, reading or finishing that book.......grab a coffee & have a chat.....whatever you pick don't go to St Kilda without a visit !!!

Wow! What a find. Leave yourself plenty of time if you want to make the most of your visit to the gardens. Beautiful and unusual plants all in natural surroundings. Very unspoilt and all for free - an absolute must when visiting St Kilda!

The Botanical Gardens are a peaceful place to visit and there is almost always a fairly secluded area one can find for some peace and solace. I would highly recommend that one takes a picnic as the on site cafe/restaurant is overpriced and impersonal, unfortunately. There are many varied walks and adequate labeling of shrubs/plants/trees for those who are interested. The gardens are well maintained but occasionally subject to vandalism, which is a sad indictment of our society.Take a book, find a place, relax and enjoy a quiet Oasis in the middle of Melbourne.

Well kept gardens with a lovely central pond. Nice walk from the city to escape the hustle and bustle.Good (but overpriced) tea rooms on the lake. Bring a picnic instead.

These gardens are a beautiful way to spend a nice afternoon having a picnic or a stroll around. A great piece of paradise in the heart of St Kilda

We visited the gardens on Boxing day in a bid to walk off some of our Christmas dinner! The park is a nice size, there are a good mix of flowers, herbs and trees. There isn't a lot of wildlife but we did spot some birds and butterflies. There is a conservatory but we found it to be unkempt. There was a lot of rubbish in the plants and ponds. There are lots of bench around the park and clean toilets.

I'd never been to these gardens until I visited a person living in Blessington Street, and I was happy to see what an asset they are for the area, which is relatively densely populated, with a lot of people living in apartments. The gardens are used by people picnicking and lying on the grass and sitting about. They're like an outdoor relaxation zone more than a botanical showpiece. I thought some parts of the gardens looked scruffy and dry when I was there. However, if you're in St Kilda and start to feel the need to get away from the bustle in the main streets, these gardens provide an alternative to the beach as a place of retreat.

Surrounded by the Tan (a walking/running track for Melbournians) its just a wonderful place to rest and to walk. Its chicken soup for the soul. If you have been pushing hard down the tourist track at Phillips Island, Great Ocean Drive, Melbourne Pubs and are so so tired. Spend a morning or a day here. Have a meal, have a run on the Tan, walk along the Yarra. No where else on earth will you experience such a place.

Nice place to lie down and relax in the shadow of the trees, relaxing atmosphere. There were many young people relaxing in the grass.

As an infant I was wheeled around the St Kilda Botanical Gardens in a pram by my mother. We lived nearby in the early 1950's. Today the gardens remain the same, quiet, tranquil and well kept oasis away from the hustle and bustle of St Kilda's tourist precinct. A perfect spot for a picnic, or simply to read a book in peace.
