We enjoyed a really tasty lunch in what was the bluestone storeroom. The service was friendly (thanks Robyn!) the mains yummy and the cake delicious! We also booked a tour of the lighthouse and the guide Gordon was terrific, we learned a lot about not only the history of the lighthouse but the history of the surrounding area. A really informative and interesting tour - well worth doing.
We had gone up several lighthouses before so we thought it was a bit expensive for such an experience. Then we changed our mind and were so glad we did. It was not so much the view that enthralled us but the explanations given by our guide Gordon, the president of the historic society. Nearly one hour and a half and not a minute did our interest slacken. We learned so much about how a lighthouse works, how and when to use the signal flags and hundreds of other things. He answered all our questions and more. The café is a must too. Not only for its excellent cakes but also for the friendliness of its staff (Steve and Robyn), its cosy chairs and its atmosphere.
There is so much to see and when one gets he chance to get a 360 degree view one finds an automatic big breath being taken in as you sigh out in feeling the peace. Do the tour, get the guide and do not neglect the cafe. The sticky date with hot chocolate or coffee is must, even if never in your normal diet. Indulge your taste buds. The brother and sister owners will help you feel one of the family and not want to leave. If you are even moderately fit do the 2 hour walk. Make sure your camera is well charged and keep it clicking. Your home movies will include this stopover.
An enthusiastic guide took us on a 40 minute tour to the top of the lighthouse. It was a very easy climb with stops at two levels on the way. The views from the top were amazing and we were surprised that more people did not do the tour.
I never actually went up the lighthouse, but stayed in the cafe for a good four hours. It is along the Great South West walk, which lots of people do each year. I was passing on part of my walk from Melbourne to Adelaide in April 2014, and went in because who doesn't need some cake once in a while. For my shame I've forgotten the name of the owner, but he's one of the friendliest and most interesting people I've met. We sat talking over coffee and cake for a solid two hours, and he let me stay a bit after closing. On top of the hospitality, the cake was absolutely incredible, I've never tasted anything better. All are home made if I remember correctly. Basically it's an amazing place, with an amazing owner, his sister's brilliant as well, there are amazing views from the cafe alone so I can only imagine they are spectacular from the lighthouse. If you're planning on walking past it, stop in, it's only a couple hours walk from the next campsite, if you're driving past and you see the sign, it is well worth stopping by.
Sometimes little gems just pop up when you're on holidays and this was one of them. A lovely warm cafe, super comfy couch, amazing coffee and hot chocolate and the sticky date pudding was to die for. We felt right at home and could've stayed all day! A great winter warmer!
it was a cold and windy day.....but the visit was worth it. The walk along the clifftops was amazing. Really needed a toilet and was disappointed that they were locked and you needed to be a paying customer at the cafe to use them...outrageous!
Cape Nelson Lighthouse is in such a pretty spot on the cliff tops, with a gorgeous bluestone cafe for lunch or coffee and cake. Recommend.
Robyn, our waitress made this impromptu lunch spot very enjoyable with her friendly manner and menu knowledge. An interesting drive to the Lighthouse then an opportunity for a stroll nearby. Enjoyed our food and some local wine.
We stayed in Portland for a few days and drove around to some of the local attractions. Much of the landscape is spoiled by those hideous wind farms. Visual pollution at its worst. The Cape Nelson Lighthouse is nothing special, just another lighthouse. However, we were disappointed to find that there were no public toilets there. There are toilets at the cafe but these are locked and can't be accessed unless you buy something at the overpriced cafe. This is blackmail!
We arrived outside tour hours so just walked around and read the information boards. Was a nice walk with great views from base of lighthouse! Pretty buildings surrounding lighthouse with a little cafe named after one of the shipwrecked boats. Worth a look!
We just turned up here - tours (cost attached) had finished for the day but still lots of info around to read. Was free to access the precinct which is why we decided to stop in the first place. Lovely views if a bit chilly. Not sure how long it would take if you did the tour. We spent about 30mins just wandering and reading. There were options for longer walks if you wanted.
Take a leisurely drive out to the lighthouse and climb up to the veiwing platform at the back of the resturant for a wonderful view of the Cape. I suggest to contact them if you plan on dining out ,most weekends they are open for coffee etc. Enjoy the comfort and warmth of the restuarant, a nice glass of wine with a delicous assortment of homemade dips and breads is one of my favourites, or a coffee of choice with one of the homemade cakes.
We had a new years eve buffet which was 3 courses entree, main and desert and included a glass of champagne for only $55 ! Very pretty location and the dining room is very nice. The owners are quirky and lovely. Recommended for couples and groups they can even do accommodation
shared a beautiful lunch with husband, just for no reason. We love the scenery, have done the walks many times before, but not eaten at the cafe. The food was a delight, fresh, and beautifully prepared and presented. A lovely day.
