Uncle Nevs is the best place to go horse riding, I go at least once every year. They have all different horses to suit all different people, the best horse for a beginner is Bridgette or Ellie. Bridgette will not go in anything other than a walk if not told to, she will trot, canter and gallop but you really have to tell her, she won't gallop off when she sees others galloping either. Ellie is very quite, she is more responsive so you can gallop more often with her, she is also quite small so very good for beginners or people who don't want to be on a larger horse. A good step up from those two is Daisy and Monty.
I recently (Aug 2014) went to Uncle Nev's with a group of 6 friends on the 9.30am 3 hour trial. We had the greatest day, the staff were so friendly, the horses were lovely and the scenery was beautiful... I couldnt stop taking photos... The first part we were in one big group and then we had tea/coffee and biscuits at this old country home with a wrap around balcony... amazing! and then we separated into groups and I went with the group wanting to gallop/canter and it was so much fun! Riding up the hill into the beautiful country side... The staff were helpful and assisted me with my horse saying, he likes this and doesnt like that which was really helpful. When we got back, I had left my car lights on and the owner (I cant remember his name) was so lovely and when I told him what had happened, he was like "right, lets jump start your car" and made sure everything was ok and was just an all round lovely guy! and waved us off even though he had to start getting ready for the next group The only thing I would say, is even though it says 3 hours its much more than this, if your in a big group like I was it takes time to mount everyone up and get going so allow plenty of time to go over... It was a great way to spend the day and I will be back again!
We went to Uncle Nevs today & were delighted with our ride. It has been a very very long time since I was on a horse. My daughters plus niece & nephew were completely new to riding. The youngest is 8.The staff were great. We were matched to horses regarding our expected ability. The route was beautiful in the hills & we were gently prompted to extend ourselves. We will certainly be back.Thank you
I went there for my 10th birthday for 2 hours with 3 friends it was awesome. I am so going back with my family. We did walking for most of it but we did some trotting, cantering and even galloping. On each paddock there were kangaroos it was so enjoyable.I recommend Uncle Nev's Trail Rides to everyone who loves riding, horses and whoever just wants to have a go.
Not much to add to the previous and only other review - also favourable. Went for the 3 hour standard ride with my 3 sons (youngest aged 13 was not experienced so ended up in the gentler group). Lots of friendly helpful staff. It was fun to be able to go flat-out a few times. Other rides (I'm thinking Mornington Peninsula here) do a really short canter and perhaps a couple of trots. Division into groups makes this ride suitable for all recreational riders from beginner to intermediate/advanced, although perhaps not for super-nervous beginners. Well-behaved and obedient horses who have to be treated with the respect they deserve (read the Virtual Lessons on their website). The ride includes a snack break (provided) / toilet stop. Good equipment including stock saddles (rather than general purpose types). Great way to spend a day if you like horses. We'll be back...
Horses are matched to your level of ability. Assistance is given by friendly staff who are there to keep you safe and happy. They split the ride into a faster and slower group sometimes after assessing your ability by taking the horses out together. This makes it better for everyone. Some of the ride is across paddocks that lead to the National Park. You can usually see kangaroos sunning or grazing as they are accustomed to the horses. Other wildlife you might see, echidna, wombats, wallabies, lots of bird life. I have been lucky enough to see deer in the forest. The ride is normally 3 hours. There is a morning or afternoon tea/coffee break with cakes and biscuits included. Has awesome view of Melbourne and surrounds. They also do day rides and cater for groups, eg birthday parties. There is a BBQ back at the farm which you are welcome to use.Best value for money ride in Melbourne.
