My partner and I and friends decided on a night out on the P.B. Jazz Train and a great night was had by all. Leaving Belgrave at 7pm we were treated to a 1 hr journey thru the magnificent Dandenongs at dusk enjoying entrees, soup and drinks. Arriving at the Nobelius Packing Shed we spent the next 2.5 hrs enjoying main course and desert, listening to a trad jazz band with opportunities to dance. Coffee/tea, chockies and port were on the train back, arriving at Belgrave at 11.30pm. The food, often a negative point of some "nights out" was fantastic, prepared to perfection and a highlight. Full marks to all staff concerned - friendly and happy to help. Highly recommended for special occasions or functions. Looking forward to doing similar trips on P.Billy
Wonderful family day out steam train meandering thru mountains full steam ahead !! Staff very helpful
The day was somewhat rainy and after driving to Puffing Billy and getting to the ticket entrance, the attendant asked, "one hour or two hours?" Assuming a choice the response was two hours only to be told that the one hour was the only thing available. Okay, then why ask? That should have been the indicator for the start and remainder of the experience. Boarding the train and selecting to sit on the rails was the choice of many. The journey started and the scenic travel was underwhelming. the first stop was uneventful, the second stop less eventful and the final stop was painful. It was raining, the cafe and some barely palatable food to eat and all in all for the price of the adventure it was not worth it. Kids would enjoy it but would get bored quickly, adults....oh well....the thrill is short lived.
Chugging along the tracks from Belgrave to Lakeside aboard the restaurant car with outstanding views. Our amazing journey started with exceptional customer service from our Head conductor for the day Bernadette. Great tips and what to expect whilst sipping a glass of wine enjoying the Natter platter taking in the surroundings that can't be seen from the road. Photo opportunities highlighted by Bernadette enhanced the journey whilst enjoying the participation from road travellers waiting and waving to us for our train to pass the crossing. Coming into the different Stations along the way greeted by young children with smiles and hands waving. Thanks to Bernadette's passion and commitment to her role our experience was very rewarding. I had my parents with me on this occasion who at times need assistance due to age were welcomed with a Fantastic customer experience and we would easily do this again. I do strongly suggest consider this for a gift idea with a difference. Lovely to meet you Bernadette and we thankyou for the pride and passion you share with everyone who travels on Buffing Billy regards Carina
Had a luncheon on the train.Booked a group and all went wonderfully.. excellent service on board and great tasting food.Wines and drinks to go.. a complete experience ..5**** all the way. Highly recommended.
combined this with the wine tasting tour/ lunch was a super day out.well organized hubby loved the train !
A nice little train ride to a nice picnic spot. Nothing exciting, but it might be nice to ride with young children. Bring some snacks and food. BBQ facilities at the last stop.
Best part of the train ride is that you can hang out the carriage! There are over 900 volunteers running the trains which makes for a very happy journey. While it is definitely on the expensive side the scenery is beautiful and the steam engines magical. Tip. To reduce cost try and get someone to pick you up at lakeside.
If you love steam trains then this is the place to go. You can take the train to Lakeside a half day trip or for the full day then you can go up to Gembrook. Money saving tip, not get ripped off by the tour bus companies, you can take the train to Belgrave from Flinders Street. Then it's a short walk to Puffing Billy .
I did this as a shore tour from a cruise, cos I wasnt interested in any of the others at all, being Aussie...and surprisingly it was good. The train was cute and did go through lovely bush/rainforest.I could've done without the obligatory tea and scone stop, but,I did enjoy the birds there. Warning..wear long sleeves,or pref, chain mail,if youre going to feed the cockys,as there will be blood!I have always wanted to visit the Dandenongs and this is the only way on a cruise as public transport there is just too hard.It gave me the intro that I needed,so now I am defs going to go back.
