Backspace Gallery is located immediately behind Ballarat's Fine Art Gallery, in the beautiful old Police Residence building. Entry is free and you will usually meet the artist(s) responsible for the works! It is a tiny exhibition space, featuring contemporary art, craft design and celebrating the arts in the region. The ever changing range of exhibitions is a feature of Backspace Gallery and has never disappointed. Most recently was an exhibition by local artist Amanda Fewell, 'The Eureka Project', exploring themes of rebellion and justice throughout the course of Australian history, in the context of the Eureka flag and rebellion.Fewell, drew inspiration from the original, iconic and sometime controversial Eureka flag, made by the women of the diggings for the miners to fly proudly, throughout the course of the Eureka rebellion. She puts it into contemporary contexts by experimenting with colour and embroidered words, resulting in a beautiful, passionate, thought provoking exploration of Australian identity and values. A quick and must visit attraction where you are gauranteed to meet the contemporay culture of Ballarat!Don't miss it!
