Warden Finnerty's house - This is a prime example of the accommodations and how the upper class lived during the roaring days of Coolgardie.Set atop a rise with a full view of the surrounding district the high ceilings and doorways to the outside would have proven to be one of the most sustainable air conditioning systems during the hot summer months.Unfortunately like many other truly magnificent older homes especially in more remote areas there simply isn't the money available to maintain it at a level so it can glow like the jewel it is.The gardens are struggling and of course during the house's hey day there would have been thriving vegetable patches as well. It is neat and tidy and you can see the heart of the volunteers keeps this alive.They have a good selection of smaller souvenirs at a reasonable cost especially for such a small project and lots of information on the surrounding areas. Our guide was most informative and helpful; of course this always helps in understanding the separate areas of the home and the furniture.

Travellers may be tempted to bypass Coolgardie on the way to or fromKalgoorlie, but there are some quality attractions to savour. The Warden Finnerty Residence is somewhat neglected following the withdrawal of National Trust sponsorship, but nevertheless something well worth visiting. Our guide (Duncan) provided us with a good understanding of its history and the items which were original. The museum (Incorporating the original Warden's court) at Coolgardie is also well worth spending some time having a look at, as are the many information boards (mostly in the main street) to read identifying present and bygone historical buildings.

First impression is that there is not a lot to this historical town, but don't be fooled. It is full of history. Be sure to checkout the museum - they have done an amazing job. In 1893 Coolgardie had a population of 25,000 with nine newspapers, three breweries, two stock exchanges. Coolgardie is also he home of the Coolgardie safe. Be sure to visit Warden Finnerty's cottage. Beautiful old house. We had a lovely lunch at the Coolgardie Motel - very clean and good food.
