I was absolutely blown away when I first stepped into this seemingly mundane building (if you don't count the rather large sign outside) in the small town of Derby. Wow. What an explosion of colour and textures. Local Kimberley artist, Mark Norval, has gathered together many pieces of his own collection, including many of his own works, and works from local artists and housed them in an eclectic mix of paintings, sculpture, jewellery and bric-à-brac in what was formerly an old hardware store. He has managed to create a space for local artists to feel free to create whilst tourists and locals alike peer over their shoulders at the pieces being created in front of them. There is a real buzz about the place.. And it's not just from the great coffee on offer. Into this mix add the proprietors and local artists themselves, Mark and Mary Norval. Fabulous hosts who were both incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the local art scene and the Kimberley itself. While there, I fell in love with a beautiful handcrafted timber slab table, hand carved boab nuts, so many paintings and some lovely jewellry. I came away with a necklace, some boab nuts and an etching that now takes pride of place on my living room wall. If you are heading to the Kimberley make sure you put visiting this amazing gallery on the top of your to do list!
