Love the atmosphere and staff of the NVC - the short term accommodation is a brilliant idea especially since the town's caravan parks have virtually been turned into FIFO camps, creating a shortfall to short term visitors and tourist to the town WELL DONE BVC
The staff were helpful, the Centre has many artifacts, and the tour they operate to Mt Whaleback Mine was very worthwhile.
Found the Centre staff to be very helpful. And I loved that the Muzz Buzz had just opened in the car-park the week we were there. We did the mine tour organised through the Centre, and it was okay. Interesting commentary, but you really only get to look at the mine from a look out at the top (similar to doing a tour of the Kalgoorlie SuperPit from the lookout), so all the haul packs etc are the size of ants. I was hoping to get a little closer to what they do, I'm guessing that as it's an older mine it just wasn't possible. Apparently the mine tour out of Tom Price is much better.
Was looking for some out of the way locations to visit and the girls there were very helpful. Nice selection of Pilbara souvenirsWill have to do the mine tour next. .
A good place to stop for information on the limited sights within Newman. They provide a great range of brochures and trinkets for the tourist.although, I did find the service from the staff, a little blase' and not really interested until you made the contact.
The Newman visitor centre provided great service. They also have new Chalets available which were very roomy. They had a big bathroom and a kitchenette style set up. We had stayed at Mia Mia previously, but the Newman visitor centre was much better. The chalets are several metres from each other with the centre attractions of old mine machinery as well as bbq facilities and an outdoor kitchen to cook and wash up. Each room had plates etc for you to cook on the bbq if you wanted. We found the chalets excellently priced and serviced. If you are looking for accomodation in Newman while travelling...this is a must. The visitor centre also runs the Whaleback Mining Tour which is also worth doing.
