It is very important to realise that if you are in a two-wheel drive car, you can only get as far as the communication tower 14 kms in from the main highway. We missed our rendezvous as a result of a misunderstanding of this, which was a great pity and resulted in one night, not two at the observatory. It meant that we had to take our car - a Ford Fiesta - twice the distance we should have, and we very nearly got stuck on a section of track road unsuitable for it and spend a night in Cocklebiddy, travelling 17kms on a dark highway - inadvisable because of wildlife - to get there. So it is vital that correct information is provided about distances, the type of vehicles able to travel what sections of road. I think that as a result of our experiences this was addressed by the bird observatory staff, but I just sound a warning here. As this is a review of our experiences as travellers I can only rate this average, but that doesn't truly reflect the experience we had at the observatory itself. It is a lovely, quaint, and fascinating and restful place - once you get there. With a nice warm fire, excellent camaraderie and good plain food it is a wonderful, and quite different, kind of stopover en route to and from Western Australia. The waders were all elsewhere at the time we visited, but the bushwalks and learning the history of this old telegraph station were great highlights.Plan your visit carefully, and do your homework well.
Stayed overnight saw birds we had not seen before. Easy 4wd track in. Well worth a visit. Lots in museum and histoty of telegraph station and the life they lived.
