The view was it's immaculate. The garden was perfect for meditation. Purity in it's form. The Art work was done local and what a perfect way to display the richness in the culture.
Just amazing!! Well worth a stop and see. Glad we stopped. We have seen several Cathedrals in Europe, and this matches.
This newly built Cathedral is very beautiful. The carvings and artwork which is very Samoan must be seen. I have seen many churches world wide but this is a beauty. It has such beautiful Pacific Island touches everywhere. It is unique in that I have not seen another quite like it.
This cathedral would rate amongst many of the special ones internationally for its unique representation of Samoan culture - how they have managed to afford such a place in Apia is a mystery and the cost to the locals must be phenomenal but for all of that it is well worth the visit.
This cathedral is still very new and is absolutely stunning inside. The art-work is traditional Samoan in the large dome over the altar and the intricately made wooden ceiling is amazing. It is well worth a visit.
Also known as Mulivai Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.Religion is a significant part of the Samoan culture. Seeing the cathedral is part of understanding the Samoans. The cathedral recently underwent a $13 million reconstruction that was completed in May this year. While the stained glass windows are beautiful we were most impressed with the Samoan art in the wooden ceiling. This is one of the most beautiful and unique cathedrals we have seen.Note: Visitors may only walk as far as the first pew to take photos.
The recently built national Cathedral replacing a iconic white walled church which was pictured in every early photo and painting of Apia from the 1800's...the dome incorporates the unique location of this Catholic church with a fresco of a chiefly village meeting being attended by some of the Apostles....
The first time I have visited the cathedral since its refurbishment (I try to visit it every time I'm in town). From all accounts, the architect had tried to in incorporate elements from cathedrals around the world.I found it difficult to concetrate on a normally engaging mass when trying to take in the stunning interior and details. A very stong Samoan influence is woven into the finer detail, including the last supper mural in the ceiling, that makes it very unique. Amazing!
The Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception has recently been reopened after significant renovation. Built in the late 19th century by German or French missionaries, I am not sure which, the cathedral's architecture is a mix of European gothic and Pacific Island openness. The nave is punctured with big doors that open onto large verandahs which keeps the atmosphere inside cool. A dome sites atop the narthex (the place where the nave meets the sanctuary) and it is simply beautiful. A painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary seated with the apostles is striking. Mary is shown dressed as a Samoan Matei or high chieften seated with a kava bowl before her. The apostles are also in traditional Samoan Matai dress. This is an amazing piece of Catholic inculturation in a building resplendent with European Catholic imagery. The stained glass is very good. Along the nave the windows form the traditional Stations of the Cross. Whether you are a believer or not, a short stop in the Cathedral is a refreshing pause from Samoa's heat. I asked if it was OK to take photos and received a welcome smile and gesture indicating it was fine. As with many things in Samoa, a sign of respect towards local customs and places will always be returned with gracious hospitality and a warm smile.
Lindíssima igreja com domo em baixo relevo de passagens Bíblicas. Seu teto totalmente talhado em madeira. Afrescos e vitrais coloridíssimos. Recomendo a visita.
Molto bello l'esterno ma assolutamente fantastico l'interno. Luogo assolutamente da visitare se si viene alle Samoa.
