We had read a great deal about the Andes Museum (a tribute to those who perished, survived and helped in the tragic plane crash in 1972 involving the Uruguay rugby team) and had the immense privilege of visiting there in December. The museum is not large but delicately and beautifully tells the story of the event. With pictures, artifacts and other donated items your are told the story of the passengers on the flight (survivors and those who perished), their families, others involved like the pilots and flight controllers and particularly those who selfishly gave of themselves and helped the survivors. If you are in Montevideo it is well worth the visit.
The curator of this museum tells the story with such heart and knowledge that you can't help but be touched by this story.Highly recommend this museum. It's about the goodness and strong spirit of the people on the airplane that crashed in the Andes.
Our experience in the Andes Museum in Montevideo was awesome! The museum curator shows passion and makes the experience unforgettable! this story should be kept for future generations and this museum is a must visit while in Montevideo. Not to mention Joerg's education and cordiality. We visited the museum in a rainy day, with our little daughter (1 year old) and had no taxis available. Joerg volunteered and took us to the hotel himself. A grand gesture which we were very grateful. In you next visit to Montevideo, don't miss the opportunity to visit the museum.
I really thought I would be bored very quickly, what a surprise! This is a must visit while in Montevideo, the chap who runs the place was there and spent time with us. Even without him it was very very interesting and well put together museum.
Both my husband and I are not particularly enamoured with museums, yet we found the intimate experience at Andes museum far exceeded our expectations. Whilst only covering a relatively small physical space, the museum packs a great deal of information within its walls. We were lucky enough to have a personal tour from the museum owner who speaks faultless English (as well as several other languages) There isn't anything that he doesn't know about the subject and has several anecdotes from his personal relationships with the survivors and their families.I think this experience would be interesting to everyone as the story is a demonstration of human spirit triumphing against all odds. I think entry was a very reasonable 5-10USD. I found myself thinking of the museum and the story it tells for weeks afterwards which is something I have not felt after visiting many more famous museums.
I was happy to find out about this Museum before my visit to Montevideo. Small but with a lot of information and details about this accident. You can go around by yourself but we were lucky enough of have Mrs Henriette assisting us thru the place...at the end you can see the light thru the darkness: how the survivors were able to made it as a team with inventive, perseverance and faith!
If you've been intrigued with the story of the Uruguayan Andes survivors and have seen the movie this museum doesn't disappoint. A great story along with artifacts from the crash site. I especially liked the daily concurrent events timeline of events at the crash site, the country of Uruguay and the rest of the world.I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a well presented excerpt from history as well as a compelling story.
The curator is both knowledgeable and amiable Norwegian. this museum had me dying to re-watch the film ALIVE.
We discovered this gem through conversation with a resident of Montevideo who had heard of this museum but never seen it This privately-developed museum reflects the dedication and perseverance of its owner. It is dedicated to the memory of the Uruguayan football team that crashed in the Andes in 1972, with some members of the team surviving for 72 days. The owner gave us a personal tour and dealt with the issue of necrophagia with great sensitivity and understanding. This gem deserves to be included in more guide books.
