There were different groups every time we went to the plaza. Scouts one day, an army group another day - we would have loved to stay to hear the brass band but it turned chilly that evening so we didn't. There are lot of different plants and great views of the buildings around.
Great park to hang out and people watch. Tour buses leave from one street bordering the plaza. The new Cathedral and the old Cathedral border the plaza. Stop to see both. Shops and some restaurants are also close by.
A wonderful, hassle-free square (unlike Quito), where you can actually sit down in peace and watch the people walking by. Make sure you also go up to the top of the cathedral and see the square from there.
We have been all over central and south america and have seen lots of squares. We love this one. Anchored by the New Cathedral, it is impressive and enjoyable. My husband parked there for hours watching the people.
You have a lot of things to do, like visiting the old cathedral and the new one, and plenty of museums around. there you can also get on the city sightseeing buses.
This plaza is very peaceful even though it is often crowded. Locals as well as tourists stop to rest here. I have often found friendly benchmates here and have had many pleasant conversations. There is plenty of shade on a hot day. There are often musicians performing. It's a nice place to sit and eat ice cream.
Great place to take pictures. Just across the street from the Old Catherdral. Parque Calderon is very clean and full of street vendors. Many tourist. Here you can catch a tour bus for only $5.00. This bus will take you around the city and its close surroundings.
This is the main square by the cathedral. It is filled with trees, well maintained flower beds and numerous benches to sit and relax. You may come across horses of various sizes, but none normal sized, placed side by side along with small cars or other vehicles. Across from these you will see a person sitting under an umbrella waiting to snap a photo of a child by or sitting on a horse or in a vehicle. There is a charge of course. What is also fun is when you come across one of these business people who solicit the help of their St. Bernard. These live dogs, (I have seen two in the park), will pose with your child or you if you want. I have seen the dog pose with a paw in the air and another time sitting on his hind legs. Other times you may be approached by university students working on some project or another. They are friendly and charming.
This place is such and interesting, lively square; full of locals and visitors alike, great people watching and good restaurants and views all around. It's relaxing to see families, couples and backpackers all taking in the views from the many benches around or enjoying their ice creams, taking photos, etc. A great way to get acquainted with this gem of a city.
This really is the heart of the colonial town and a good place to start and explore the streets leading from it. Flanked by the impressive new Cathedral, the old cathedral, the justice building and also a beautiful hotel (can't remember the name) there is lots of beautiful architecture to take in. The flower market is just around the corner. Lots of nice cafes and restaurants dotted around the surrounding streets. The plaza itself is pretty with lots of trees, flowers and street vendors who don't bother you. It's kept really clean. A really nice place to sit and eat lunch or just relax for a while.
