To think that this building was started in 1557. It is a beautiful building and I am glad they put it to good use rather than tear it down when the 'new' cathedral was built. Many interesting church artifacts.
The tours are all personal and to have the history of the construction AND the people who have used this sanctuary explained is very valuable. It's a work in progress, so be prepared for different tours at different times. The hanging photos of old Cuenca are worth the $1.00 donation admission charge. The gift shop is good as well. To understand Cuenca history, you need to know about the power and influence of the old families that ruled here. This is a great starting point
This Catherdral is gorgeous. It's under construction but you can still see the beauty. Just beautiful. A must go! Next to parque Calderon
It will cost you $1 entry to visit, but it turns out it is well worth it. Up at the altar is a life sized grouping of the last supper minus the table and food. Jesus is surrounded by his followers. When I first walked in, spotting this out of the corner of my eye, I thought I was interrupting a service in progress. The church is plain, but it is part of the charm. It is not overly laden with gold and ornamentation. Continue past the altar to the next room that looks like some type of meeting room, but then venture outside. On the right hand wall are interesting old photos and on the left is the gift shop. I did not venture in, but others I spoke with said they had some incredible and reasonable items for sale in there.
The contemporary carvings of the Christian story are in striking contrast to the age of the building. The wooden model of the "new cathedral" is beautiful!
To my knowledge masses are no longer offered at this site, which is now considered a museum. It is beautifully maintained and is the only site where I have ever seen life sized figures of the 12 apostles arranged around the main alter. It is also used as a concert site; we attended a very moving musical performance here the week before Christmas. A must see.
This cathedral is quite plan as far as cathedrals go but think for a moment. When this was built (1557), it would be 83 years before the Pilgrims would land on Plymouth Rock! Put in this context, this cathedral represents a monumental amount of work and dedication! There is some nice artwork inside. You can smell the history. The double decker bus tour ($5) starts and stops right outside the cathedral on the west side (between the cathedral and Parke Calderon).
This an absolutely beautiful facility that lends itself to musical performances.I attended a symphony performance which displayed the talents of an outstanding orchestra. The performance was so enjoyable that the time absolutely flew by.David B
This should be one of the main reasons for your Cuenca visit: a stunning cathedral. Visiting the tower is recommended: you get a nice view of the city and its surroundings. The cathedral remebered me of some of the nice european cathedrals. A highlight of Ecuador.
It's not the grandest or the most beautiful church in Ecuador by any means, yet it's just across the street from the New Cathedral and therefore surely worth a visit, especially that this church (now museum) is authentic in its style to the century when it was built (unlike the new one). See the frescoes and the ceiling.
