2014, I went, by any chance, in this place which was just in front of my hostal and I was really happy of what I have discovered inside: a very nice place with lots of different souvenirs to buy and a very nice girl with who I discussed for quiet a long time. We talked about Ecuatorian culture (culinary specifialities) and she gave me very good advices. I was travelling alone and it was a pleasure to meet her. She and her place are really welcoming. You cannot miss this place if you stay in Latacunga!!
Five of us went with Volcan Tours in Latacunga to Cotapaxi. The volcano itself is great and we had a wonderful time. The company provided transport, a guide and packed lunch. The trip cost $35 each, which was a good price. The lunch was good. However, it was clear from the start that the driver/guide, Alex, did not want to be there. He hardly spoke to us. We were told he had knowledge of the fauna and flora. If he did he did not share it with us. When we arrived at the first stop, a lake, he stayed with the vehicle and told us we had 20 mins to walk around the lake. When we arrived at Cotapaxi, whilst the route to the top was obvious, when we got out of the van he just walked off without saying anything. On the way up he charged ahead as if we were on some kind of time schedule. The Refugio at the top is closed so no bathroom. On the way down he was trying to hurry everyone. When we got back to the van after the trek he told us we had 10 mins to eat our lunch. We were told by the company we would be back in town by 4pm. As it was only 1pm and the drive back was an hour. We could not understand what the rush was all about. On leaving the park he did not ask if anyone needed the facilities at the park entrance. He had to be asked to stop as he drove past. It is another hour back to Latacunga. We were back by 3pm. The service from the driver fell far short of what we would have expected. So if you book with the above company then ask not to have Alex as he clearly does not like his job or tourists. Ecuador has stopped charging entrance fees to the national parks, except the Galapagos. This happened last year. Alex told a member of the group that the company was paying the fee. So either he is very badly informed or not being truthful. Another reason not to have him.
