Each exhibit has Spanish and English explanation. There is lots to see and plenty to learn. It is not crowded.
The intricacy of the pieces here, the history and tradition in them... it's a wonderful museum to wander through and marvel at. Unlike anything I've ever seen.
Please allow yourself at least 2 hours since there are several floor to see the ancient development of the tribes and cultures of the Andes here. Lots of authentic gold artifacts and ancient poetry and mythology. You can rent head sets or hire a live tour guide.Wait until the surprise at the end of the tour!
My wife and I like adventure in our trips. We prefer surfing lessons to guided tours, cooking classes to tourist traps. So when she told me that we were spending part of our afternoon at a gold museum, I wasn't thrilled. I was mistaken. The history of the museum, the enthusiasm of our guide, and the intricate work of the gold pieces was fascinating. One of the cooler, unique experiences is an interactive room in which you enter in the dark, the door is closed, and you are eventually surrounded by chanting and lights that reveal thousands of original gold pieces on the walls around you. On top of the artifacts, the museum's restaurant was top notch. The only mark was the gift shop...I rarely want to bring home chachkes, by I was really in to some of the gold figures created by a wax-loss molding process. The selection was limited...I would have likely spent a fair amount of money on a few replicas if they had then there.
Great place with some master pieces not only from Botero. The museum is also located in a really nice building in kind of Andalusain style.
use the audio. this is a very special, amazingly well designed audio to explain the history and significance of each section of this early history of the country. it focuses far more on the gold than other crafts and skills but does provide broader context. this museum can be overwhelming so go when well rested.
If you go to only one museum in Colombia, make it this one. It sets out admirably not only the history and regional variations of the art but also the processes for manufacturing the artefacts. Two or three hours, plus a nominal entry fee, very well spent.
The collection is HUGE and the museology work is impressive and everything is carefully placed so you can see the evolution of gold jewlery. After 30 minutes it becomes exhausting, but the circular room and its lights show is enough to keep you interested.
One of the best curated, most comprehensive museums in the whole continent. And lots in English, which suited us well. Just be aware, it's all on Pre-Colombian art so if you're not feeling a brain-heavy activity, maybe wait! But well worth it if you're a history/sociology buff. Plus the display at the end of gold whirling round with shamanic chanting was pretty trippy. We wrote a blog with some more tips on Bogota too: https://ednaventures.wordpress.com/2014/10/21/bogota-and-the-worst-hamburger/
We were very impressed by the quality and number of exhibits. Almost all had an explanation in English and they were well arranged. Photography without flash was allowed, and the shaman chanting made an amazing finale for us as we ran out of time! There were several small video shows which rested our feet. One other thing which was great for us was that senior citizens are admitted free!
