I had seen a television programme about the history of the church last year and it was on the top of my list of places to go in Salvador. Go early or make sure there is not a cruise ship in port, as it can get busy. We visited around 10a.m. in the morning, there is a small entrance fee, some of the outside parts and courtyard are in need of renovation. Once inside the church it is magnificent, so beautiful, full of gold and story telling. The Frescos on the ceiling are beautiful. We had a guide and he explained the history of the church - No 1 thing to do in Salvador.
The inside of this church is covered by golden sculpted gilt woodwork and paintings, it is incredible work. The walls of the cloister like side entrance are decorated with the typical blue tiles all imported by boat from Portugal. Don't miss it!
we were lucky, the guy of the ticket office approached us when we had started already our visit, he began pointing out the details we missed softly and gently, in little time we started getting in sync with the how's and why's of the place, we don't like intrusive people and he definetly wasn't one. Eventually we learnt more than we expected and connected dots we couldn't think of by ourselves, at the end of the visit twe insisted to tip him as he wasn't expecting any. Just regret we didn't ask his name for a more precise reward,
This is the best sight in Salvador. It is worth the entrance fee and is a magnificent building with the most gilded altar and side altars imaginable. The worksmanship is supberb and we were truly astonded at the pregnant, black, angels. Do look out for them! They were there to remind the white, male, congregation of their sins concerning their black, female, slaves, but also to ensure that money was forthcoming at confession time! Our guide was fantastic and I will always remember this church.
Take you time and read all the inscripts on the blue tiles in the courtryard - they have biblical wisdom.
This is a very beautiful church in baroque style. Impressive interiors with lots of wooden and golden work, and the hallways feature really nice (but not so well kept) azulejo panels. In the convent you will also find a small exhibition of vintage stamps, coins and notes.
Beautiful church, was surprised by Salvador and this area where the church is as it's very pretty, with fab views over to the sea. The church charged a small fee to go in, but it was worth it
The São Francisco Church and Convent does not seem like that much from the outside but the impressive gilded woodwork and sculptures inside are a very pleasant surprise, even if you've visited a million churches during your travels. A recent restoration of the Portuguese tiles in the convent hallways did not do them justice, unfortunately, but once you make you're way into the church itself you'll be glad you've visited.
One of the best places in bahia! Must visit the place for the architecture of the old town of Salvador especially during summer time or during the festivals
After visiting many churches on our trip, this one pulled us in and was worth the price of admission.
This church was very ornate and so much gold leaf... In an area of the country where there is so much poverty. If you like visiting cathedrals then this is certainly worth a visit.
Do not miss seeing this place.Well worth the fee and worth as much time as you can afford to see.I don't want to give things away but interior is just jaw dropping, IMHO
