After spending 6 days in Rio celebrating carnival my wife and I thought it would be a good idea to get some exercise and complete this hike. We did the hike mid February and what was 38C weather. What can I say, the trek up was a bit challenging but the guides are great. Take your time, no need to rush and just know that at the top is a spectacular view and a nice cool breeze to freshen you up. I would recommending doing this tour as it gives you a great opportunity to see what Paraty is. From taking a public bus to a boat to the base of the peak to the view from the top.
Having only made contact with him a couple of days before, I was really glad that Michael of Paraty Explorer was able to accommodate our wish to climb the Pico do Mamangua. Being the idiots that we are we ended up doing it in temperatures of 38º-39ºC (mad dogs and Englishmen, etc.) which although being a little challenging at times was equally so satisfying . As every other review has stated the views from the top are stupendous, and the cool breeze was so welcoming. Michael is a truly great guide, stimulating, friendly, informative, and good company. Yes, you can do this climb on your own as the path is pretty obvious, but having a guide is more motivating and Michael it so much more interesting than if we had done it on our own. We enjoyed a very simple lunch at one of the local Cruzeiro beach restaurants and it was delicious. Fish fillet, rice, manioc, beans and a tasty mango salad - all yummy.I defy this not to be a highlight of anyone's holiday - it certainly was for us - and definitely not one to be missed.
After a 40 min bus ride down rough roads, then a boat ride to get to the small village at the base of this peak a group of 60ish Canadian adults started the climb. We were with Michael of Paraty tours , who provided encouragement without pushing us along. Although two of the five in the group had to turn back as they were weak from some earlier digestive system issues , the three who continued were rewarded by an interesting, challenging hike and phenomenal views and photo ops at the peak. The heat and humidity created a challenge, however it made the swim and the beer that much better when we returned to the base. It was finished off by an excellent, simple fish lunch at the bottom, fish caught by the husband of the cook.
A group of 6 met up with rodrigo in paraty. we caught the bus which took us to a remote little village and from there jumped on a boat which took us to an even more remote little village at the bottom of the peak. the climb through the jungle was very challenging and took about 1 hr 20mins. However it was all worth it when we got to the top and saw the most amazing views over the mountains, lakes and sea.rodrigo was a great guide and this trip is highly recommended although the climb is not for the feint hearted!I booked the trip with michael at paraty explorer over the internet, before we arrived in brasil and it was a very straightforward process
My father climbed this at 67 years old - but the photos are amazing and he had a fantastic time. Really recommend you do this if you have the time. Mamangua is beautiful.
We went up to the top, it takes about 1-hour climbing and something less to come back.If someone don't feel like hiking can wait in the nice beach at the bottom where there is also a simple sort of restaurant with good food. The climb is beautiful all within the rainforest, quite steep, not to be done after rain. We went up with a very good guide from Interacao Ambiental as it is recommended to have a guide if you don't know the track. The view from the top really worth the hike.
We visited this peak with Paraty Explorers (reviewed separately). You need a boat to get here, the nearest from the tiny village of Paraty-Mirim (accessible by bus).A steep trail leads you directly to the top. It took our group of 6 about an hour to get up, less to get down. You can see for miles at the top - mostly unspoilt jungle, the curve of the coastline, and a few houses. After the descent we had a dip on the beautiful beach and bought some fresh fish from local fisherman Orlando. A day to remember.
Paraty by locals , set me up an amazing day with a local small boat , who took me all the way there , once there we wen't all the way to the top and get one of the most amazing views i ever see it
Great views from the top. You might need a guide to find the correct route. No technical skills required.
As part of our 3-night stay in Paraty, I had decided to book us the top 3 attractions according to our good friends at TripAdvisor. This trek lived up to its status and reviews. I had emailed with Michael Smyth, partner/owner of Paraty Explorer, before leaving the U.S. to arrange the date of the hike, appropriate footwear, lunch options, and pay the deposit via PayPal. So great to correspond with Michael ahead of time. It was an even nicer surprise to have Michael as our guide up Mamangua Sugarloaf Peak for the day, as well as his Czech co-guide Miko (sp?). After a short car ride from our pousada, we took a bouncy, potholed bus trip to Paraty Mirim (aka Little Paraty) where gold was shipped to Portugal, and slaves were imported from Africa. Waldir, a local boat operator and fisherman, ferried us around the peninsula from Mirim to Mamangua Bay where we would start our hour-long trek up to the summit of Mamangua Peak. As a tourist side note, Michael pointed out where the crew of "Twilight", the teenage vampire series had recently rented out a house to do some filming. After dropping some gear off at the local restaurant where we would have lunch, we started up. And up. And up. The native people didn't believe in switchbacks here, so a lot of the hike is going up natural stairs and ledges made by roots of trees in the remnants of the Atlantic rainforest. Michael paused every 10-15 minutes to let us out of shape folks catch our breath, take a drink, and absorb the beauty. I noted earlier we had corresponded by email about footwear, as we didn't want to bring extra hiking shoes or boots just for today, and we managed to go up and down in Tevas just fine (down was a bit trickier). After about an hour and probably 400+ meters in elevation and 2+ km in length, we reached the impressive round summit of Mamangua Sugarloaf. The views are a spectacular 360 degrees, over the tropical "fjord" (really a drowned river mouth, not glacial), Paraty Bay, Ilha Grande, and beyond. The clouds would roll in and out, and the character of the views would change every few minutes. Michael and Miko were extremely friendly and helpful guides, answering just about every question we had for them. After some snacks and rest on the summit, we took about half the time getting down and took a brief dip in the cool water before lunch. We had settled on the fresh squid, which was delicious, accompanied by basic and tasty rice, beans, salad, and farofa (fried manioc flour). It was a fulfilling, long, and memorable day with Paraty Explorer!
The walk starts off with a very steep climb but don´t be disheartened, it is all worth it. As you finish the first leg you drop down onto a pristeen beach, remove your shoes and wade out into the clear waters to get a boat to the other side - it was picture card perfect. After another steep climb (just keep thinking about how toned your legs will be after!) you reach the top and wow, the views are fantastic. We booked with Paraty Explorers and owner Paddy, they don´t have a shop in town but check out their website. Our guide was Rodrigo, he was really friendly and very knowledgable. You should definately do this trip.
You may wonder when you´re scrambling up this steep, steamy jungle trail why on earth you agreed to climb Mamangua Sugerloaf Peak (or perhaps why on earth you agreed to that 4th caipirinha the night before), but just wait until the bush subsides, the air clears and you find yourself at the summit, looking down on the vultures, the jungle and the fjord below. We went in a small, friendly party with Interação Ambiental, and Jorge, our guide, was absolutely fantastic. Practically the best thing we did in all Brazil.
This was a fantastic day out starting off with an energetic but not overly-long hike to the fjord (apparently you can even see whales there if you are lucky!), then along the beach front until we took a quick boat ride across the fjord and climbed the sugarloaf peak with time for a quick swim on the way! Nothing I could say can really prepare you for the view from the top. You emerge from the thick forest and pick your way to the treeless rocky summit where you are greeted by a panorama that takes in a glorious combination of narrow spits of forest-clad land fringed by beaches separated by the azure sea. Tiny islands and far-off shores add further magic to a view that repays the effort of the climb a hundred-fold.Paddy and Rodrigo are the guides and they combine the energy, experience and expertise on local history and ecology necessary to complete the package. Perfect.
We took this hike with Michael from Paraty Explorer (www.paratyexplorer.com) and had a great day! It took us about 90min to get to the top, and we were absolutely astonished by the view over the Brazilian fjords! Michael is a great guide and if necessary (which was the case ;-)) talks you up the mountain ;-)
My 22 year old daughter and I (53 year old mom) had a wonderful hiking experience with Rodrigo of Paraty Explorer. The view from Mamangua was amazing, but it was also fun to hike through the forest and enjoy the peaceful beaches of the area. We were even able to enjoy an impromptu and tasty squid dinner with a local fisherman. It was a wonderful way to really absorb the beauty of the area and be far away from any crowds.
