My boyfriend and I drove here expecting beautiful turquoise shores and what we found was an extremely crowded and touristy sea front with some white sand but no turquoise waters. We ended up driving south down the coast where we found more beautiful and completely deserted beaches. Disappointed in Bahia Inglesa.
In the Atacama desert you feel as though you are on Mars or Marte as the say here. This bay is stunning with the sand dunes in the background. Early in the day there are few people. You can snorkel, scuba, kayak and rent umbrellas. Be careful to not get burned. People bring their dogs but they don't bother anyone. Good food is available. Good place to shop for mohair scarves, swordfish/goat swords and creative jewelry. Bathroom is in nearby hotel.
This is a resort place for the better-off Chileans, but there is really very little to do, the place being a bay, there is no strong surf, but the temperatures for swimming are not very comfortable. And except for the somewhat calmer ocean there is nothing special about this place.
Just a few kilometres from the port city of Caldera, this is a must visit spot in summer. Been here more than 20 times. The bay is very calm and he swimming in the Pacific is safe and refreshing. Yu are the more adventurous type, try kayaking or wind surfing. The restaurants along the beach serve fresh excellent sea food, with a wide variety of cuisine. A nice place to spend a weekend.
Lots of Chileans come here for summer vacation. There are camping and hostel type accommodations as wells as a couple of expensive hotels. The big attraction is the white sand beach and the shallow coves. The water can be pretty cold but that doesn't stop kids on a hot day. There are some attractive restaurants serving ostiones or scallops. There are several kiosks with rocks and jewelry for sale. A very tie-dye atmosphere. Can be foggy and cold in the fall and winter months. There are kayak rentals as well as day trips to some petroglyphs and a national park. It makes a good break from the desert. Bring cash as there are no ATM's or banks except at the gas station and the next town, Caldera. Taxi fare to Caldera is 900 pesos .
Great little beach and the people are very nice. Hotel Rocas de Bahía Inglesa has 5 stars but only deserves 2. Manager says they are owned by Spaniards who don't want to spend on up keep. Couldn't see out the windows of our suite. After asking for the windows to be cleaned for 2 days, I finally took buckets of hot water from the sink and tossed them on the windows. Funny experience
