Patagonia has been on my bucket list for a long time and our time at Torres del Paine brought the Patagonia of my dreams to life. We went on a tour organized by our hotel in Puerto Notales, and had very knowledgeable and attentive guides but there is no way to experience this place without being blown away by its magic. Summer meant sporadic rains and high winds, but the temperatures were comfortable. Our beautiful planet has never looked better to me than when we were in this amazing, peaceful place.
We just returned from a one week trip organized with BlueGreen Adventures and these guys are fantastic. We were traveling with a pretty wide range of ages (75, 68, 40, 38, 9, 6 and 2) and abilities. As our wonderful and knowledgeable guide, Chris, explained to us, he had a "Plan A, Plan B, Plan C and even a Plan D," and he really did. Our 2 year old was pretty tired at one point so we cancelled a planned hike but Chris had a Plan B (or maybe it was even a Plan C) so we just did something else (involving Chris teaching our girls how to skip rocks along Grey Lake). We went on a horseback riding excursion and my 6 year old (who has been riding horses for 3 years) wanted to ride on her own (without being tethered to the guide) so Chris stayed right alongside her and helped her through the ride. He and our driver shared their stories about Patagonia and their love for their home was so evident. Not that the area needs any help in showcasing its beauty, but these guys made us fall even more in love with the area. Their knowledge of the area was also tremendous. They spotted wildlife that we never would have seen without them and we constantly felt like we were being let into some secrets of Patagonia, something we could not have felt without being with these guys. These guys also helped organize a camping trip which was another family highlight. Even though we travelled with young kids, Patagonia was the perfect vacation spot with kids. They ran and played and spent HOURS exploring the outdoors. It was honestly, the perfect family vacation. Bluegreen adventures gave us the opportunity to see this part of the world - and we owe a great deal of this trips success to these guys. Can't recommend them enough.
If you go to Chile, this is the place to visit! I went there on a one-day organized trip by car and by foot from hotel Noi Indigo Patagonia, where a young and very kind staff replies to your every request.Take some warm clothes with you, even a hat and gloves, because the winds are very strong there. I was there in February and I must tell you it was freezing cold, but it was well worth it! A great trip and great pictures with gorgeous landscapes and lots of cool animals along the way - condors, guanaco, pumas, rhea etc.
The W trek is amazing. I did this solo but stayed in the Refugio and buying breakfast/dinner. Lunch was usually given to me by others because the portions were so large. Plan for random Patagonian weather. Dress in layers. I had more rainy days than sunny, and even when it was dry, it would randomly start raining for several minutes and then stop again. It would be hot and then the sun would be clouded and the winds pick up, and then you're chilly and ready to throw on some extra layers. For being Chile's première trek, portions of the trail appear to be in poor condition (those portions not caused by disrespectful hikers hiking off trial and adding to the severe erosion). I'm referring to the wooden walkways that are destroyed, or feeling like they will break the moment you step on it. Be careful stepping on them, or you twist your ankle or worse if they finally give way. Enjoy the moment with fellow trekkers during meal time, and don't forget to say "hola" to others as they hike past.
We did the w in4 days, staying at paine grande, cabanas Los cuernos, and hotel las Torres. We were unaware of Refugio Frances, an option the would have made the britanico hike easier. The trail is very popular, so book early. Easy trail to follow. Be prepared for frequent weather and clothing changes. Viewpoints are spectacular but strong winds do not encourage sitting around to enjoy them
The W side of stuff is pretty busy and some of the camp sites are better than others. But the views are amazing and the trekking is fun.
There seems to be so many questions regarding buses to Torres del Paine that I thought some detailed information would help fellow travellers:Puerto Natales is the nearest town to Torres del Paine and as such is the gateway to the national park.If you are already in Puerto Natales and just want to get into the park it is possible to take morning or afternoon buses with 3 different companies – Buses Gomez, Maria Jose & JP.Tickets cost $15.000 Chilean Pesos for a return (U$25 approx).SCHEDULE 1PUERTO NATALES TO THE PARK Departure from Puerto Natales 07:30 Stop at Laguna Amarga 09:45 Stop at Pudeto (Catamarán) 10:45 Arrive to Conaf Administration 11:45 SCHEDULE 2PUERTO NATALES TO THE PARKDeparture from Puerto Natales 14:30Stop at Laguna Amarga 16:30Stop at Pudeto (Catamarán) 17:30Arrive to Conaf Administration 18:00SCHEDULE 1 PARK TO PUERTO NATALES Departure from Conaf Administration 13:00 Stop at Pudeto (Catamarán) 13:30 Stop at Laguna Amarga 14:30 Arrive to Puerto Natales 17:00 SCHEDULE 2PARK TO PUERTO NATALESDeparture from Conaf Administration 18:00Stop at Pudeto (Catamarán) 19:00Stop at Laguna Amarga 19:45Arrive to Puerto Natales 22:00You can book these buses either through your tour operator/hostel/hotel or from the bus terminal in Puerto Natales once you arrive.**Since September 2013, a new public bus terminal opened in Puerto Natales. It’s located in at Av España 1455 Oficina 6 Rodoviario de Puerto Natales. It includes central ticket counters, a cafeteria, snack shops and toilets. All regular inter-city buses serving Puerto Natales arrive at and depart from this new terminal, instead of using each bus company’s own offices.
The Torres del Paine parc is a fantatsic place for walking and travelling around. For us it was the main attraction of Patagonia.
It is possible to drive to and within Torres del Paine National Park, stay and eat in hotels and take day hikes and do it all independently. You do not need to hike and camp the W or Circuit, do an inclusive tour or take a tour from Puerto Natales to see the park. We flew into Punta Arenas, rented a car, stayed two days there (one visiting Isla Magdalena), one night in Puerto Natales, six nights within the park, and a final night in Puerto Natales in February 2015.Driving: You do not need a 4WD and a reasonably gas efficient car will get you to all the main hikes and sites on one tank. (There are no gas stations within the park.) You do not need GPS and in fact, we did fine with the map our car rental company gave us and the map provided by the park. Roads within the park are rough but constantly being improved and graded. (The park is prohibited from putting down hard surfaces.) We did not need our spare tire.Food and Lodging: Hotels within the park are very expensive, as is the food at the hotel restaurants. There is no real alternative. We ate in the restaurant bars in the evenings and packed lunches. We brought lunch food from Puerto Natales but there is a small grocery kiosk at Hotel Las Torres and you can buy prepared bag lunches from the hotels. Breakfasts were included. We divided our time between Hotels Las Torres and Lago Grey to minimize as much as possible the long drive across the park. Both have day hikes that begin at the hotel or a short drive from the hotel. Day hikes: We are a couple in our 60s and I am of just average fitness. My husband carried a day pack with food and water. I've listed only day hikes that we took, times and difficulty for us and how congested. All hikes are out and back on the same trail. Most are parts of the W or Circuit. I've included photos of each of the hikes but I have to say that they ranged from beautiful to breath taking. I've ranked them from most to least favorite from each base.Hikes from Hotel Las Torres: Base of the Towers. 8 hour walk, first and last part difficult but well worth it, very busyLago Nordernskjold. turn back whenever but about 4.5 hours to Refugio Los Cuernos, easy to moderate, moderately busyLaguna Azul. 4 hours, easy, no one else in sightHikes from Hotel Lago Grey:Combination boat and hike to overlooks of Glacier Grey. Ask at the excursion desk at Hotel Lago Grey. It was a newly added excursion, costing 70,000 per person which included a guide (excellent), packed lunch, drinks, and the regular glacier boat ride tour. We checked in at 7AM, took the boat to Campamento Grey, hiked through old growth forest to views above the glacier and to the lake for up close views of the icebergs, and returned by boat via close up water views of the glacier, arriving back about 7 PM. moderate, alone with guide while hiking, boat holds 50.Mirador Ferrier. 4 hours, difficult steady uphill, passed only three groups.Short hikes around Lago Grey from the hotel. varies, easy, moderate depending on time of dayBetween the two hotels:Mirador Cuernos from Salto Grande. 2 hours, easy, moderately busyValle del Frances. We did not manage to do this one but it is possible. It requires a ferry ride across Lago Pehoe and hiking out only so far as to catch the return ferry. We really had a wonderful time. I hope this answers some of the questions I had when planning our trip. Happy travels!
This place is not only beautiful, is clean and gorgeous. We walked every day and drank water from the steams, we didn't get sick. The water is so clean it even taste better. It's windy but amazing and I want all my loved one to come here and see this place. You won't be disappointed.
4 hr hike to Base Los Torres is fantastic, but can be extremely busy during good weather. If you need a park permit, you should go early to avoid huge bottleneck and chaos at park office to obtain the pass and view safety video.
It is a park of amaizing natural beauty! We did the whole "O" circuit with a couple of friends and had a great time! Some may say that facilities could be better, but on the other hand building to much in the place might kill the feeling that you get on being in a natural and well preserved surrounding.Very recommendable for someone looking for an outdoors backpacking adventure!
GO TO TORRES DEL PAINE. One of the most stunning places I've ever been. The most beautiful place for walking with such diverse scenery. The paths are incredibly well-marked and the refugios brilliant. You'll never forget your trip to Torres Del Paine!
