we were surprised to find a big folk lore dance festival going on. People really use the central plazas
A plaza full of people sitting on benches, around the church steps, motorcycles riding around and people of all ages strolling joyfully. There are many vendors & you can get excellent fruit juice, ice cream, canapés, arts & crafts. The Nativity scene centered in the middle was awesome & many people were taking pics. Excellent & safe atmosphere!
A nice place to sit and relax or take a walk and feed the birds. Its kept nice a clean and the plants flowers and trees are all well cared for
I personally like the Santa Cruz main plaza. There are a ton of stores and restaurants in the area, and its just a nice place to sit and relax. At night the guys with the little coffee carts come around. My girls love to chase the pigeons too! Plenty of shady seats to choose from.
As I live in Santa Cruz I can't say that I don't like the Plaza although it has nothing to attract tourists and wouldn't recommend people to go and visit it if people are looking for things to do. The plaza is great if you want to relax, eat some ice cream and watch people but other than that there isn't a lot to do here.
Santa cruz is a untouristu coty. Not a lot of sites. This was just another average square. Not great but rather shoddy and nothing for the traveler. Way to kill an afternoon
nice to hang out. it gets very busy in the afternoon and at night. Use to have native sloth, but they moved them to the zoo.
The plaza continues to impress. I had been there as a child and its pretty much the same, thought the city is 100 times larger. The only thing different that I found was the old ice cream place had drastically changed and was now a huge restaurant club.
Its beautiful and atmospheric yet very tranquil and peaceful. Catherdal is very beautiful and there is a lovely market on sunday. Was really great. Challenge a local to chess!
Plaza 24 is a very nice place to be, with a very mild weather year round. It's always full of people, kids, youngsters, families, old fellows. You can spend a long time just sitting under a tree, feeling the fresh breeze, have a sweet coffe and watching or if you're up to have a historical chat with regulars at the place.Like I said, is the perfect spot to start and finish your tourist day
Pleasant, calm atmosphere in early evening, watch world go by, ice creams and juices, etc, before visiting church. Interesting to come in the local "winter" - nice and warm without being overpowering as on a previous visit (in March).
Nice square with lots of attractions like the Sunday market for instance. I have been there on many occasions and experienced all the changes from the Cathedral renovations to the pedestrian extension on the square Plaza 24 de Setiembre. The Ethnoligic museum and shopping malls all around are nicely designed in the colonial style that makes the centre of Santa Cruz a charming city. I highly recommend "El cmbio Aleman" for tourists who need to change money. I have known that exchange office since the 1980's and they are the best in town.
This is the main Plaza in the growing city of Santa Cruz (de la Sierra) and is very much the preferred location for shade, relaxation and general people watching. It is completely traffic free although you will have to cross roads to get to the center. There are plenty of seats and also one or two fixed chessboards where if you are brave you can challenge the locals or just watch (and learn?). There is a resident population of pigeons which can be a nuisance and sometimes you can spot a Sloth in the trees although most of them have been removed to safer locations. The Plaza is served by a few cafes and bars in the surrounding buildings, notably the Irish Bar which has an open balcony overlooking the square and serves wholesome food throughout the day (as well as various alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages). For quiet contemplation there is the Cathedral (closed between 12:30 and 3pm) or if you feel more energetic you can climb to the top of one of the towers for a (restricted by pigeon netting) view over the plaza. There is a secondary plaza behind the Cathedral which is used for every purpose from political meetings to artesian fairs. It is NEVER necessary to change money in the street (but you will be invited to do so). There are many 'Casa de Cambios' in the streets around the plaza where you will not be cheated as the money is counted out in front of you and you count it again in the same place. Exchange rates are just as good as the street merchants so don't risk being cheated. This same advice could apply to any location throughout the world!Occasionally on festival days there are parades and events which are generally centred close to the Cathedral steps. These don't affect all of the Plaza and rarely cause problems. All in all it is a people and child friendly oasis in a big city.
I have very bad experience with moneychangers near the plaza.the legal shops where close as i was desperate of money to pay my lodging i trusted those people hanging outside the shop.as it turns pot they cheated me with 200bolivianas.they will show you the complete money counting in front of you but they will hand to you not the correct amount. So be sure never to transact with this cheaters.i have to walk back far just to complai to the police thinking they will apprehend the cukprit but no the police only make me come back 2 times and when he said i come back 3rd time i totally give up.not woryh it!!!!The police dont seem to be keen on helping tourist in trouble.and the 2 times i needed direction to get back to my hotel thenpolice cannot seem to point to me the general dirction of my street!they dont even recognize my street!I have very good experience with my hotel receptionist who is quite friendly and helpful.the wet market vendors, restaurants i buy food and stuff are all nice and kind and understanding.with just sign language and a smile and ok sign we understand each other.i like the hard earning people of bolivia becoz they respect and decently earn their money.not like the easy going cheating animals that hang around the plaza area waiting to victimized innocent tourist of their hard earned money.im so disappointed of how the police handle my case.never again trust these kind of people.
There is some shops, cafe's and restaurants around, but the plaza itself is more a place to come and relax. There's always people around but the plaza is of reasonable size so you can usually find an seat somewhere along it's sides.Have a seat, relax, and enjoy the people watching.
