This is one of the most beautiful lakes in El Chalten. It is surrounded by glaciers and has a green emerald color. The hike to the lake, takes you thru an amazing wood with a small river. Most tourist do not know of this place!!!
The bus from El Chalten will drop you at the trailhead of this short hike through an exchanting forest, complete with Patagonian orchids (in season) to a small glacial lake (with a glacier behind it, of course). Good place for lunch, leaving enough time to amble down to where the bus will pick you up. Bonus: the bus stops at a lovely waterfall and the memorial of a border battle between Chile and Argentina--one Chilean was wounded; the Argentine medics were better equipped, so they treated his wound.
We took the Las Lengas bus at the el chalten bus terminal, for ARS 200 return. The bus can also pick you up from your hostel if you make a reservation or booking in advance. The Las Lengas bus ride was excellent, and the driver made a couple of photostops for us. The bus ride took about 2 hours one way from el chalten to the base of the hike to glacier huemul. As you have to enter the estancia or private reserve, there is a fee of ARS 100 per person. The hike itself is an uphill hike, about 2km long one way. Its a pleasant hike uphill, and as you approach the glacier, the turqoise lagoon emerges!
The blue lake emerging from glacier has made the view superb of this glacier ..It was sooo serene blue ..It takes 45 minutes to 1 hr hiking from point where mini van drops you off and you need to buy 100 pesos ticket for hike since one has to pass through private property but hike is worth the effort ...The transport company should give more time than 2 hrs to enjoy the view as up and down almost takes 2 hrs ...We booke dwith Las lengas and they gave just 2 hrs ..Try to find the company which waits for more than 2 hrs ...
We drove from El Chalten to the bottom of Laguna del Desierto and then did the easy hike to Glaciar Huemul. The road from El Chalten follows Río de las Vueltas, and along the way we stopped to watch a pair of torrent ducks frolicking in the rapids. The view from the end of turquoise-colored Laguna Huemul was beautiful, although the glacier itself is much smaller than others we saw on hikes around El Chalten, and does not come as far down as the lake itself. To the right of the lake are two small ridges and from the top of the second one (where we had our lunch) there is a nice view back over Laguna del Desierto. We spent 3-4 hours on the hike, looking the area at the end of the lake, and having lunch.
We did a bike ride from Lago Desierto back to Chalten and we hiked to Glaciar Huemul on the way. It was ~45 up and ~45 minutes down (but we are fast hikers). The the small laguna at the base of this glacier is actually the color of blue Gatorade. I've never seen a natural body of water of this color. It was pretty spectacular. You also have a beautiful view of the valley leading back to Chalten from the top of the ridge near the Glaciar. Very highly recommended!
You will be investing 45 min of walking going up through the forest. there is a clearly signalized way to get to the glacier, A great value trip!
if you are in el chalten & do not want a long hike,it is nice to walk around lago desierto & do hike to the glacier.it is a short, mostly covered trail & beautiful view at the end.
