I strongly recommend Cerro Castor to go skiing, run trineos pulled by dogs, have a great "cordero fueguino" with Malbec... it works! As a family plan is really good cause it´s quiet not so big and not many people
I can't really evaluate it since I couldn't go up there, but wanted to warn travelers that it is closed in the summer, lift doesn't work and the stores under it are also closed.
For all those who love skiing/snowboarding, Cerro Castor has caught me! I'm a skiing lover although I'm Brazilian, but going to Cerro Castor, mainly in mid September showed me that's there is the place to go in the end of snow sports in South America... beautiful landscape, nice staff, Snow Resort was empty, no lines at all, and lots of fun! I loved and I can't wait to go there again!
We were so lucky that a storm had dumped fresh snow at Cerro Castor the week before we arrived - last week of the ski season! We hired our gear in town so we could basically get off our minibus and grab our lift tickets and go as soon as the lifts started ( catch the 0900 minibus). Not all the lifts were operating but there were certainly enough runs of all different levels to keep us occupied for the full day.Great day
Steep and tough skiing but the scenery is wonderful. Would love to go back one day. The weather is a bit temperamental though
Cerro Castor is my favourite over all Argentinian ski resorts. I love the slopes, snow is the best in Argentina and it lasts until October, lifts are very good for south american standards. On the down side, food is expensive and a bit tasteless (except for 600 restaurant), and I hadn´t a good experience with kids school and snowboarding instructors, that was the only wasted money. For the rest, Castor is worth the 3 hours plane from Buenos Aires.
Buy your tickets in the City before going, there is a store in San Martin avenue. Reserve your equipment for few days before so you can avoid huge lines to pick up your equipment.
if you consider the good and bad things, Cerro Castor can be considered the best ski area in South America. The ski is good (not the best - Valle Nevado is the best for ski, but it's only for ski, you are alone in a hotel in the mountain), the city also is good (not the best - Bariloche has the best city but the ski area is very bad - frequently rains these). So, looking for the balance, Cerro Castor (Ushuaia, is the best).
Small and cozy mountain with some great trails, not very steep. Quality of snow is outstanding... Some times the wind blows really hard making difficult to ski/snowboard specially with kids. Best ski resort in South America with the complain about only one ski-in/ski-out Hotel.
Overpriced and you are stuck there until your shuttle comes. The sled dogs are not treated well, the ride was short and WAY overpriced. The food at the resturant was good, but expensive even for a tourist trap.
