The castle is surrounded by several areas including batteries, walls, outer town/shops, even a moat. The castle itself consists of a large courtyard, series of wards (rich with art, tapestry, statues, furniture, and other items of historical significance), and a series of dank tunnels underneath the castle. If you navigate the tunnels (flashlight/torch recommended) you will find Holger Danske (see tripadvisor listing). You can choose from several guided tours, in different languages, but we chose the basic entry and then purchased a small booklet with details of nearly all of the rooms and artifacts.Definitely worth a day-trip from Copenhagen if you like renaissance-era history or have an interest in its connection with Shakespeare's Hamlet.

If you're willing to take the train 45 minutes out of Copenhagen, this makes for a great day trip. The castle is amazingly beautiful on the outside. The inside exhibition starts off a little slow but gets a lot better at the end. I think there's a guided tour include that I wish I would have gone on because there was not a lot to read about the castle. The tour of the casemates and Holger Danske was interesting, but there wasn't a ton to see down there. Nevertheless, I'm glad we made the trip out.

Visited Helsingør at the end of our visit to Denmark Prior to our visit we purchased Copenhagen cards (120 hours for £75) this included free travel to this beautiful townThe weather was awful but didn't spoil the visit - Kronborg Castle was included on the Copenhagen card for a free visit- so despite heavy rain we made our way there - there is lots to see and really would take more than a days visit This 16th century castle is immortalised in one of Shakespeare's plays as ElsinoreWould love to return on a good summers day

very scenic from the outside. appropriate location for a picnic, the beach is easily accessible, the ferry station is also close.

Horatio's recounting of Hamlet's story while guiding us through the castle was terrific. Made both the castle and Hamlet more real.

First, I recommend looking into the Copenhagen card if you are visiting from Copenhagen. It covers the admission (to everything) as well as the train ride up (about 45 minutes). The castle was great. Even a self guided tour is quite interesting, but the 45 minute tour provide is great and points out some really interesting highlights of the castle as well as the history. The area and town itself are a fun visit as well so this site makes for a great day trip from Copenhagen if you are based there.

We bought a 24 hour pass 130DKK each for the train (as we were taking the train to the airport the next day so killed two birds with one stone) and took the train from Central station to Helsingnor. Trains run every 20 mins or so and it took about 45 minutes. It is the end of the line so you can't go wrong, then when you get off the train, keep walking straight on and the castle is well signposted. The entry fee was 90DKK and we took the included guided tour of the castle and this was well worthwhile as our guide had some interesting tidbits to tell us which added to the appreciation of the location. It was interesting to hear how the king was taxing all the ships going through the narrow straits there between Denmark and Sweden. We also hadn't realised quite what a history there was between Denmark and Sweden!!In February on a cold day, it was even colder at the castle as it is next to the water so if you go in winter, make sure you are rugged up well against the cold.We had coffee and cake at a nice little café outside the castle walls. The old town is also quite interesting to wander around.

We took the train up from Copenhagen - 45 minutes away - and really enjoyed both the guided tour and the self tour material!

It was fairly easy to take the train to Kronborg from Copenhagen. Once you reach Helsingnor, you have about a 3/4 mile walk from the train station to the castle but the town of Helsingnor has much history so there are plenty of stops that you can make on the walk there. There is also a little train that goes closer if you don't want to walk. The castle itself is surrounded by a moat and a nice view of the water and shoreline. I would make sure that I took the guided tour because even though it doesn't take you through the whole castle, you get important background information to understand what you see. Many of the rooms are empty due to a fire in 1629 which destroyed their contents, but it still remains an interesting historical experience. It is most widely known as the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

A truly spectacular setting for Hamlet. Great place to visit as a one-day trip from Copenhagen. Convenient train journey to and from Copenhagen Central Station. Across the sea is Helsingborgs in Sweden. Huge ferries take passengers to and from the port.
