This is well worth the journey from Copenhagen into Hillerod. The castle is beautiful and when you go inside you get to see all of the old rooms and learn some Danish history. There are maybe a few too many portraits, but that's not a major problem. The gardens around the castle are lovely too, especially the big Baroque garden at the front. And you can take a rest at a quaint cafe in the grounds, which also has a handy timeline of the castle and the monarchy.Definitely go here.

Frederiksborg Slot (Castle) in Hilleroed is one of the 3 beautiful Castles in North Seeland. Here you may find paintings of the Danish Kings and Queens and their "staff". You should also visit the church within the Castle. The Castle shows the "Story of Denmark" as the oldest Kingdom in the World...This is a spot where you often can meet Her Majesty Queen Margrethe, opening a lot of exhibitions, taking place on this wonderful Castle.

Frederiksborg Castle is a very nice place to visit - especially during the sommertime (from spring to autumm) when it also is possible to walk in the most beautiful surroundings: The Baroque Garden is amazing and very well keept. It's at complete copy of the original garden from the 1600-1700 Century. Even though there might be a lot of visitors it is a peaceful place and when you are walking through the Castle yard (maybee with a stopover inside the Castle) you can really feel the atmosphere from the old days. If you visit the park surrunding the baroque carden you will find a lot off beautiful places between the small lakes and very big and old rhododendron, oak trees and so on. Bring the hole Family for a nice picnic or just your husbond/wife for a romantic walk - maybee people from abroad, they are always very impressed.

If you're doing a trip just to Copenhagen, it might not be worth it to go to this castle, but if you're doing more of Denmark than just Copenhagen, this is definitely a site worth visiting. Or, if you've seen a million castles around Europe, this is just one more castle; nothing super-duper special: typical overly ornate everything, from the ceiling paintings to the staircase bannisters and everything in between. But if you do visit, you'll enjoy it. It is beautiful and has some amazing art and armor suits and the castle itself is a work of art. I'm glad we went there.

Frederiksborg Slot has to be one of the most beautiful castles to visit and has a wonderful array of preserved artifacts showing the history of the Danish Royal family including some wonderful portraits in The Great Hall. The baroque chapel is stunning as are the many ornate rooms with wonderful ceilings and pieces of furniture, porcelain, clocks, etc. The grounds are also magnificent, even in winter. There is no cafe on the premises, only a museum shop but Hillerod city centre is just a short stroll away. Definitely worth a visit with a reasonable entry fee.

Visited this castle as a part of a day trip outside Copenhagen: Frederiksborg Slot, followed by a stop in Helsingør for Kronborg Slot and then onto the Louisiana museum. I wish I could have spent even more time at this amazing castle / museum! The castle has almost an overwhelming amount of artifacts, really bringing Danish royals and their history to life. The free audio guide was clutch in explaining what I was seeing. It was a great guide, especially considering it was free! It doesn't explain pieces in each different room, but it was very informative. There are a lot of picturesque views to be had inside and outside the castle, I can only imagine how beautiful it might look in the summer with the ornate gardens in full bloom! If you are short on time, this should still be a priority. If you can't allot much time here, make sure to see the chapel and the great ballroom. Both were gorgeous.

This is a beautiful castle, one of the most beautiful in Scandinavia. The castle is wonderful, especially the chapel. The grounds are magnificent and in the summer there's a small boat running trips crisscrossing the castle lake. Try it, its a ton of fun.Be on the lookout if you park at the castle as the parking attendants are quick to pass out parking tickets.

it was quiet during non-peak season so we got to enjoy ourselves and took our time viewing this huge castle. too bad the weather was gloomy and it was too cold to check out the gardens but we loved it anyway. it was still breathtakingly beautiful!

Hillerod is an easy train trip out of Copenhagen, about 1 hour or can be combined with going to Helsingor, and taking a linking train to Hillerod. The slot is about 15 minutes walk from the station, around the lakes surrounding the castle. The castle is approached over several bridges which link a series of islands. It is free entry with the Copenhagen card. Also free is a ride on a small ferry from the town to the entry or to the gardens. This ferry gives a great view of the slot from the water. The slot itself is huge and consists of a huge Baroque chapel, an art collection of contemporary Danish artists, and a series of rooms furnished as they would have been from the Renaissance to the Victorian period. The whole castle is lavish, with wonderful ceilings and period pieces. Allow plenty of time to explore the interior and appreciate the ambience. There are many opportunities for photos of the magnificent rooms. Especially elaborate is the Great Hall and throne room.Outside there are numerous fountains, and a marvellous reconstruction of a formal garden, which is accessed via a causeway to the surrounding parkland. The garden is wonderful - lots of views of the slot across the water, clipped box hedges, statues, fountains, formal bridges. The park and garden is accessible for free, as is the courtyard area of the slot. There is no food at the slot, but the town is only a 5-10 minute walk away.

Lots of things to see. I particularly liked the model of the solar system. So complicated i couldn't understand it at all. The castle was filled to the brim with history. Do get a Copenhagen tourist card and you can travel to the slot and to the Kronborg castle. I did it and was back almost gefore dawn. The transport in Great Copenhagen is excellent.
